Car vs. tree
Woman remains in hospital after crash
Detroit officials join in protest of waste well permits
Retiring Historical Museum director to be honored
A 26-year-old Dearborn woman remains in the trauma center at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor after rescue workers worked feverishly to extricate her from a vehicle that crashed into a tree in Van Buren Township Sunday after-noon.
According to Battalion Chief Daniel C. Besson, incident com-mander at the site, Van Buren Fire Department dispatchers received a call at about 4:15 p.m. Sunday reporting a car crash at eastbound I-94 near Haggerty Road. The caller said the car had struck a tree along the right shoulder of the roadway. Van Buren Police were already on the scene when rescue workers responded at 4:21 p.m. and found a Honda Civic crashed into a pine tree about 12-18 inches indiameter.
The male driver was outside the vehicle sitting on the ground, Besson noted, and was being assessed for injuries. The passen-ger, however, was trapped inside the car as the right-side front door took the brunt of the impact. The tree had toppled over in the crash and was resting on the roof and the hood of the car. The force of the impact caused the roof of the car to cave in around the woman who had suffered an obvious head injury and was being attended to by a Van BurenFirefighter/Paramedic. Besson noted that the woman's legs were trapped inside the vehi-cle and that she had become quite combative as the paramedic attempted to assess and attend to her injuries.
“Crews from engines one and
two worked feverishly,” Besson said, to stabilize the car, remove the tree that was trapping the woman and then remove the windshield that was leaning against her. Besson said he requested Medflight to transport the woman as her injuries appeared to be life threatening. He also requested additional resources from
Belleville, he said.
He cancelled both those requests, however, when the efforts of the Van Buren rescue workers were successful and the woman removed from the twisted remains of the Honda. The patient was transported to the trauma center at St. JosephMercyHospital byHuron Valley Ambulance while fire
department personnel assisted. The injuries to the male driver were not believed to be life threat-ening, while the passenger was being treated for a severe head injury and a fractured pelvis, Besson said.
Michigan State Police are inves-tigating the circumstances sur-rounding the crash.
Senator Hoon-Yung Hopgood highlighted the fact that officials from the City of Detroit have joined the chorus of voices speaking out against the proposal to re-open the Romulus hazardous waste site. These additions came during the final days of public comment on the permits for the former EDS (Environmental Disposal Systems) facility.
Hopgood made the announce-ment and comments in his monthly newsletter sent to constituents by mail and electronically.
In addition to Congressman
JohnDingell's continued support of community efforts to fight the oper-ation of this hazardous facility, both Congressmen John Conyers and Hansen Clarke recently sent letters stating their opposition to the issuance of the permits, according to Hopgood. Written comments highlighted the broad coalition of citizens, organizations and elected officials that have spoken out on this issue. State Representative Rashida Tlaib of Detroit also sub-mitted comments opposing the per-mits.
Hopgood said he believes the
broadening opposition to the "out-rageous proposal to resume opera-tions at this site" should send a clear message to state and federal regulators. According to the sena-tor, the applicant (Jim Papas) lacks the qualifications to handle haz-ardous waste, the legitimacy of his application is in question, and past mismanagement has already risked thewell-being of citizens. Hopgood is urging the Michigan Attorney General's office to issue a formal response regarding the questions raised in a May 5 letter on the well permits before the state
and federal agencies make their determinations. The letter asks for clarification regarding Papas' eligi-bility to apply for the permits, which could impact the final per-mit decisions.
Sam Riddle, former political consultant, admitted to conspiracy to commit bribery and extortion with respect to Papas providing $20,000 for favorable treatment in attempts to purchase the haz-ardous waste injection wells once runbyEDS inRomulus.
Hopgood said that he and State Rep. Doug Geiss sent the letter to
the attorney general seeking an opinion as to whether there was any wrongdoing on the part of Papas in the application process as related to theRiddle evidence. Papas has agreed to buy the wells from the Detroit Police and Fire Pension Fund, which obtained ownership of the facility whenEDS filed bankruptcy, on the condition that operating permits could be obtained from the state and federal agencies. The wells were closed in 2006 while under EDS control when state inspectors found safety violations.
A 26-year-old woman had to be removed from this Honda Civic on Sunday after the vehicle crashed into a tree near eastbound I094 near Haggerty Road. She sustained a head injury and fractured pelvis while the driver's injuries were not life-threatening.
