Romulus Beautification
Committeemembers will accept
nominations for the 2018 exteri-
or home decorating contest
through the month of July. To
recommend a home or homes
or a business, contact commit-
tee Chairperson Chris Dunn by
e-mail
at
or call
(734) 955-4556.
Last year, the city awarded
158 beautification award certifi-
cates, bringing the total to more
than 250 in the last three years
of the program. This year, busi-
nesses will participate in the
contest and committee mem-
bers said they expect entries to
surpass that number.
At a spring Beautification
Committee meeting, Mike
Gubaci, president and general
manager of Two Men and A
Lawnmower Professional Lawn
Care Company, was the guest
speaker. He instructed the
group on how to produce a
healthy andbeautiful lawn.
Gubaci listed 10 steps essen-
tial to effective lawn care:
• In early spring, repair any
damage caused to the lawn by
grubs, moles or small rodents.
• Rake the lawn to remove
leaves and debris and to stimu-
late the grass root system.
• Fertilize the lawn with a
mixture to include active ingre-
dients for crab grass prevention.
• Water the lawn regularly. If
the grass goes into a drought sit-
uation, it will be more suscepti-
ble to diseases. Always water in
the early morning before the
sun rises.
• Prep the lawnmower
according to the manufacturer
instructions. Sharpen the
blades, change the oil, spark
plugs, fuel and air filters.
• Cut to a height of 3-inches
as a general rule. Cutting the
lawn too low will make it more
susceptible to drought and turn-
ing yellow.
• Every other week, alternate
the cut patternswhilemowing.
• Rake after mowing to stim-
ulate the grass or mulch cut for
several weeks after fertilizing to
avoid bagging up the fertilizer
you recently put down.
• In the fall, thatch and feed
the lawn.
• In the late fall, just before
winter, seed the lawn.
For the best grass feeding
and nutritional results, Gubaci
said, hire a professional fertiliz-
ing company, or homeowners
can purchase the product and
follow the direction provided by
themanufacturer themselves.
Two Men and a Lawn Mower
has been based in Romulus
since 1998. Gubaci, who lives in
Romulus and is a former
Romulus firefighter, said the
firm provides lawn mainte-
nance, fertilizing, shrub trim-
ming, mulch, sod, shrubs, retain-
ingwalls, brick pavers and other
landscapingwork.

Inkster residents will see some
changes starting July 1 when a new
trash contractor provides them with
curbside recycling.
Inkster officials have employed
Green for Life Environmental Group
(GFL) a new trash hauling service
which will provide residents with a
new 96-gallon garbage cart in addition
to a 65-gallonblue recycling cart.
The carts will be delivered to each
home.
Current bins are being collected this
week on corresponding collection days
by Republic Waste, and GFL will deliv-
er new ones starting the week of July

As the city transitions into the new
eco-friendly program for the communi-
ty, residents are asked to leave their
trash out in closed plastic bags, only in
themorning, until the newcarts arrive.
Recycling items including card-
board boxes, plastic milk jugs and bot-
tles, phone books, household plastic
items, aluminum, steel and tin cans
