Schools propose
balanced budget
The Van Buren Public Schools
Board of Education has reached a
contract agreement with one of the
largest unions serving the district
and is now poised to adopt a bal-
ancedbudget for the 2012-13 year.
The proposed budget will be
discussed at a public hearing at
6:30 p.m. June 25 in the administra-
tion buildings. If adopted, as it is
proposed, the budget would fund
the current deficit, satisfying the
state deficit elimination plan and
leave at positive fund balance of
$226,602. The proposed budget
includes staff layoffs and deep cuts
to the current staff and services
which have left the district $2 mil-
lion over the budget revenue.
Revenue for 2012-13 is projected at
$45,717,411 and expenditures in
the newbudget are $45,267,560.
The figures include a reduced
salary for the school board mem-
bers and an enrollment decrease of
98 students, with a total student
population of 5,249. The budget
was compiled including a reduc-
tion of $48 per student in state
funding and the retirements of
eight teachers. Other factors
included were salary increases as
dictated by the union agreements,
an increase in taxes, retirement
expenses and health insurance
cost changes.
The board members ratified a
one-year contract with the Van
Buren Education Association
which represents the teachers ear-
lier thismonth.
The contract provided the
change in health care fees includ-
ed in the budget and added eight
days to the schools schedule while
also allowing for 14 furlough days.
The new agreement provided $3.9
million in concessions from the
union which was instrumental in
the deficit eliminationplan.
Superintendent of Schools
Michael Van Tassel sent a written
statement noting, “Our teachers
have agreed to some major finan-
cial concessions. Our teachers in
Van Buren Public Schools made
the choice to dowhat is best for stu-
dents and put the needs of this dis-
trict above their own. With somuch
criticism leveled at education and
teachers in particular, it is most
gratifying to know that this group of
selfless educators is part of our
schools and community.”
