Church hosts lecture series
Purposeful Living Finding Your Life's
Purpose, a five-week series, will continue at 11
a.m. each Sunday through June 29 at Grace
Community Church {Comfort Inn Belleville}

Reading programunder way
Registration is now under way for the
Summer Reading Program at the Romulus
PublicLibrary, 11121WayneRoad.
The program is open to children ages 2 to
11. The "Read-to-Me" program is for children 2
to 5. The "Independent Readers" program is
for children 6 to 11.
After a child is registered, all he or she has
to do is read, fill out time logs (five in all) and
return the time logs for a prize. The last day to
choose a prize is Aug. 8.

• Wednesday, June 25 - Nankin Mills
Interpretive Center will bring live animals to
the library, 1 p.m.
• Wednesday, July 2 - Watch "Disney
Nature: Chimpanzee" (subject to change), 1
p.m.
• Wednesday, July 9 - Lois Keel the
Storytellerwill visit the library, 1 p.m.
• Wednesday, July 16 - Dynamic School
Assemblies will teach participants about the
science ofmusic, 1 p.m.
• Wednesday, July 23 - Representatives of
the University of Michigan will demonstrate
some great science experiments, including
some that can be done at home, 11 a.m.-Noon
and 12:30-1:30 p.m.
• Thursday, July 31 - Finale swim party at
theRomulus AthleticCenter, Noon to 4 p.m.
Prizes will be raffled off during the July 23
program.

Bike parade entries sought
Children 5 and older can plan on entering
the Northville Independence Day Parade
planned for 10 a.m. July 4.
The theme this year is Celebrating
America'sHeroes and youngsters should deco-
rate their bikes to celebrate the holiday.
Parents can walk with children during the
parade.
Those who wish to participate can arrive at
the Northville Downs parking lot at Seven
Mile andSheldon roads by 9:20 a.m. July 4.
The bike parade contest is sponsored by
Meijer and thewinners each receive a gift cer-
tificate fromthe store.
The parade is presented by the Northville
Community Foundation. For more informa-

Teen reading programset
Teenagers are invited to read books and
win prizes during the Teen Summer Reading
Program offered by the Romulus Public
Library, 11121WayneRoad.
Registration is under way at the library.
Readers can actually be as young as 12 and as
old as 17 to participate. The last day to reach
and choose a prize is Aug. 8.

p.m.
• Thursday, July 3 - "Don't Try This at
Home" experiments, 1 p.m.
• Thursday, July 10 - Meet an officer from

• Thursday, July 17 - "Gamefest": play video
games at the library, 1 p.m.
• Thursday, July 24 - Watch "Divergent" at
the library (subject to change), 1 p.m.
• Thursday, July 31 - Finale swim party at
theRomulus AthleticCenter, noon to 4 p.m.

Day camp opens
CampRAC - the annual SummerDayCamp
at the Romulus Athletic Center - is now under
way.
The camp is open to children ages 6 to 12.
Camp days are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays
through Fridays, through Aug. 22 (with no
campwithweek of June 30-July 4).
Campers will have the opportunity to par-
ticipate in games and activities, such as arts
and crafts, dodgeball, basketball, volleyball,
rock climbing, swimming and much more - all
in a safe, instructor-led environment.
Rates are $80 a week for RAC members or
$20 for a daily drop-in; $110 per week for non-
members or $27 daily drop-in. Daily lunch is
an additional $4 per day. Early drop-off (7 to 9
a.m.) and late pick-up (3 to 5 p.m.) are available
for $6 per childper hour.
The Romulus Athletic Club (RAC) is locat-

Steel Magnolias on stage
Inspire Theatre will present Steel
Magnolias at 7:30 p.m. June 20 and 21 at the
new venue located at 5767 Executive Dr. in
Westland.

Library hosts lecture series
The Plymouth District Library will
host music professor, Karl Schmidt for a
four-part series this summer.
Schmidt will present music and video
excerpts from films such as The Jazz
Singer (1927), Gone With the Wind (1939),
The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), High
Noon (1952), andmany others, as well as a
study of political and social changes that
influenced all forms of art, including
films.
All four sessions are scheduled for 7-
8:30 p.m. Wednesdays Registration is

The film score hits it's stride as it
accompanies some of tinsel town's classic
films.

After World War II, films and film
music become darker andmore realistic.

andFound
Big changes in films and scores in the
50s, but it all comes back again in the 70s.
Schmidt is a professor of music at both
Hillsdale College and Concordia
University Ann Arbor, where he teaches
voice and music history. As a vocalist, he
has performed with the Michigan Opera
Theatre, Toledo Opera, and Arbor Opera
Theatre, among other companies. He has
also performed as a soloist with local sym-
phonies, including the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra. In the realm of musical the-
atre, he has been performer, conductor
anddirector.
This music series is made possible
through the Michigan Opera Theatre's
Department of Community Programs and
the Friends of the Plymouth District
Library.
