Student election is
‘real-life’ experience
Taco Bell OK’d by council
Music series acts announced
It was a real slice of adult life for Belleville
High School students last month when they
chose their new student council representa-
tives.
The students were ushered into a real
polling place in the high school cafeteria
whereVanBurenTownshipClerk LeonWright
had authorized the installation and use of the
official voting machines and election equip-
ment fromthe township.
Several volunteers helped students through
the voting process, just as it would have taken
place in an official local or federal elections.
The mock polling place included not only vot-
ing machines, but genuine ballots and vote
countingmachines for students.
Wright said in a prepared statement that in
addition to encouraging students to vote, town-
ship officials hoped the experience would also
encourage more young people to get involved
in the democratic process.
“This project allows students to experience
roles they would encounter when serving as
precinct inspectors. Our goal in providing this
true-to-life experience is to encourage a life-
long commitment to voting andparticipating in
the democratic process,” Wright stated in the
release.
The voting experience was funded by dona-
tions from The Charles B. Cozzard Rotary
Foundation, Inc. 34th District Court Judge
DavidParrot andL&WEngineering.
Despite some concerns over traffic flow,
Romulus City Council members approved a
special land use request last month that will
bring aTacoBell restaurant to the city.
Located on about 1 acre of vacant property
off Wayne Road, close to Romulus High
School, the restaurant will be a 2,169-square
foot eatery that will seat 54 people and have a
drive-through, said Eric Iversen, a spokesper-
son for Sundance, Inc, the franchisee.
The restaurant will be south of the high
school on the western side of Wayne Road,
built primarily of brick with neon lighting
effects.
“It's a verymodern look,” said Iversen. “It'll
be a very attractive building.”
The property is bordered by school on the
north, the former PNC Bank location on the
south and the Barrington Apartment complex
on the west. A 6-foot screening wall will pro-
vide the border between the restaurant and
the complex and encircle the dumpster area,
as well. It will necessitate a new driveway to
WayneRoad, however.
“We talked to PNC about a shared drive-
way andwe talked to the schools; both did not
want it,” Iversen said.
Iversen said in addition to the new, mod-
ern look, the sitewill be verywell landscaped.
“There's a lot of green space on the site. It'll
be filled with trees and shrubs,” he said. “It's
going to be an attractive site-not just the build-
ing, itself, but the landscaping aswell.”
Mayor AlanLambert agreed.
“You might think it's hard to get excited
about a Taco Bell, but this really is a nice-
looking building,” he said.
The restaurant couldbe open this fall.

Home advantage
The Romulus Eagles, the Division 1 champions of Michigan high school basketball,
have received some more hometown love. Romulus City Council members adopted a
resolution to place state championship signs at major entryways to the city. Mayor
Alan Lambert presented one of the signs and proclamations to all team members and
to Coach Nate Oats. Lambert said the signs would show the city pride in the team.
"Everybody driving into Romulus is going to know we're home of the state champs,"
he said. Mayor Pro-Tem LeRoy Burcroff said the council wanted the team to be con-
gratulated and led a round of applause for the Eagles. On hand for the presentation
were senior captain EC Matthews (left), junior Steven Clark, sophomore Jaylin Walker,
junior Ken Henry, Oats, senior captain Leo Edwards and Assistant Coach Steve
Glenn, who was the point guard on the Eagles team that won the 1986 state title. All
five senior starters on the team will attend Division 1 colleges. Oats thanked the com-
munity for "the tons of support" the team has received, ranging from residents voting
for a school millage election that kept sports and other programs intact to business
owners funding buses so fans could attend the state championship game to local
people who supported the team all season long.
