Lights OK’d for downtown
Legislator hosts coffee hours
Belleville Downtown Development
Authority members have unanimously
agreed to spend $65,090 for the installation
of 146 replacement light fixtures in the
downtown area.
The 54-watt LED light fixtures will be
installedby the lowbidder, Airport Lighting.
The decision was made following the
installation of sample lights in the Doane's
Landing an South Street area. The lights in
the South Street area were considered too
bright and had too much glare, according to
the 22 responses fromresidents.
The installation will not begin until after
the Strawberry Festival and will take about
three weeks to complete. The project will
not require the closing of Main Street and
should be minimally disruptive to traffic,
according to aDDA spokesperson.
The new LED lights were preferable to
the existing lights by 76 percent of those who
responded. Engineers said that the new
lighting fixtures would save energy costs and
have suggested that an evenmore significant
savings might be possible by replacing the
double-armfixtureswith single-armones.
The payback period on the LED invest-
ment is expected at about 10 years.
State Rep. Dian Slavens (D-Canton) will
host coffee hours from 8-9 a.m. June 4 at the
Belleville Charhouse, 524 Main St. in
Belleville and from 5-6 p.m. the same day at
the Daydream Café, 47192 Michigan Ave. in
CantonTownship.
She plans to meet with residents at the
same times and locations again on June 18.
Slavens hosts regular coffee hours and
townhallmeetings.
