Run for it
Liberty Run will aim for world record
Belleville Rotary Club awards $2,000 scholarships to 10 high school graduates
Where will you find nearly 700 people
dressed like the Statue of Liberty and run-
ning like their lives depended on it?
Just check the Guinness Book of Records
to discover that they'll probably be at the
June 15 Canton Liberty Run trying to break
their own record set last year.
The record for the “Largest Gathering of
People Dressed as Landmarks” was set last
year as 684 participants who wore Statue of
Liberty costumes participated in the race.
The event combines 5K and 10K races with
a 1-mile fun run. An “Uncle Sam Slam”
allows experienced racers to run both the
5k and 10k courses. Entry fees include a
unique, three-piece Lady Liberty costume
provided in place of the traditional t-shirt
andbibnumber.
Canton Liberty Fest and Running Fit
teamed up to create this event to promote
the Canton Flag Day celebration. Running
Fit has served Michigan for 28 years, and
organizes numerous races for serious and
not-so-serious runners throughout the
Midwest.
According to Guinness, the official defini-
tion of this record is “for the greatest num-
ber of people dressed in costume as land-
marks at a single venue. For the purposes of
the record, a landmark is defined as an
iconic monument or building, e.g. the Eiffel
Tower, Statue of Liberty, or TajMahal.”
The first race begins at 8 a.m. starting in
Heritage Park June 15, the final day of the
22nd Annual Canton Liberty Fest. The
world record attempt is scheduled for 9:55
a.m. in the park.
The race course runs through Canton
parks, including the pedestrian trail along
the Lower Rouge River, and finishes back at
the Liberty Fest. Racers are not required to
wear the Statue of Liberty costume during
the run/walk. However, all are invited to
wear the costume for the Guinness record
attempt at 9:55 a.m.
For information about the race, including
registration, log on to www.cantonliber-
tyrun.com.
The Guinness World Record crowd was at the Canton Liberty Run last year. Organizers from
Running Fit are hoping for an even larger crowd this year.
For 68 years, the Belleville Rotary Club
has presented scholarships to deserving area
students to help defray the cost of furthering
their educations.
This year, club members chose May 14 for
the annual Scholarship Award Program
which saw 10 Belleville High School gradu-
ates each receive $2,000 from the club. Three
of the awards were second-year scholarship
renewals.
Belleville rotary Club President David
Parrott welcomed the students and explained
the scope of rotary and the purpose of the
club. Debra Juchartz, a club member and
chairperson of the scholarship committee,
introduced keynote speaker Scott LaRiche, a
member of thePlymouthRotary Club.
LaRiche stressed the importance of atti-
tude in individual success and told the
assembled crowd and students that attitude
is a choice that an individual makes every
day.
To date, the Belleville Rotary Club has
given more than $400,000 to Belleville High
School students as part of the scholarship
program. The primary source for the pro-
gram is the Charles B. Cozadd Rotary
Foundation.
Winners, who each spoke about their edu-
cational goals and provided a brief biography,
included new scholarship recipients: Jonas
Acuna, Kyle archer, Daizchane Baker, Asia
Dobbins, Destiny Lanay Eadie, Samantha
Henning and Roderick Walker, II. The three
renewal scholarships went to Jennifer Henry,
Zachary Juchartz and JacobLong.
