Former Inkster City Councilman
Michael Greene was found guilty of unau-
thorized access to a computer during a
bench trial in Wayne County Circuit Court
earlier thismonth.
Circuit Circuit Judge Michael Hathaway
found Greene, 53, not guilty of charges of
misconduct in office, obstruction of justice
and use of a computer to commit a crime.
The charges stemmed fromGreene's tenure
as a court officer in the 22nd District Court
in 2010 during a lawsuit filed by a police
officer against the city.
Prosecutors claimed that during the
trial Greene accessed the Inkster city attor-
ney's e-mail account and printed a defense
strategy memorandum which was subse-
quently shared with the plaintiff in the law-
suit by his fellowcourt officerRonaldWade.
All charges against Greene were dis-
missed in circuit court in 2011 but prosecu-
tors appealed that decision. Based on testi-
mony during the appeals hearings from for-
mer 22nd District Court Judge Sylvia
James, the charges were reinstated against
Greene. James testified that Greene told
her he used the city attorney's computer
and printed the memo which he then sup-
plied toWadewho gave it to the plaintiff, Lt.
KevinSmith.
Smith's attorney said at the time that he
refused to even read the document and that
it was never a factor in his pleadings before
the court in the case.
A forensic examination of Greene's com-
puter showed the person using themachine
logged on using his name and accessed the
city attorney's email account and printed
several documents.
Greene claimed that he was not in the
courtroom when the action took place but
had left to attend a veteran's group meeting
inGardenCity.
Greene's case had been listed on the
court docket for several months as a sched-
uled jury trial but the bench trial, in which
the judge is the sole decider of fact. Wade
was also charged with Greene as a co-
defendant. Wade entered a no-contest plea
to willful neglect of duty of a public office
and was sentenced to one-day, time served
in 2013. Both men were fired from their
posts as court officers by James when the
original chargeswere filed in 2010.
Greene served as an Inkster City
Councilman from 2007-2009 when he
resigned to help care for his wife who suf-
fers frommultiple sclerosis.
He will be sentenced on the single
charge of unlawful access to a computer on
July 11. The maximum sentence under the
law is 5 years inprison.

Candidate for superintendent chosen by board
Former court officer found guilty of computer crime
After interviews with five candi-
dates, members of the Wayne
Westland Community Schools
Board of Education have selected
Michele Harmala as the final can-
didate for the position of superin-
tendent of schools in the district.
Hermala, currently the associ-
ate superintendent for instruction-
al services and organizational
leadership in Farmington Public
Schools, will replace Dr. Greg
Baracy, who announced his retire-
ment last January. Baracy said he
will leave the district after 19 years
in July.
Harmala was the unanimous
choice of the boardmembers.
She is also a candidate for the
job of superintendent of the
Southfield School District where
she has made a site visit and
attended a second interview with
the boardmembers.
She is scheduled for the same
type of visit in theWayne -Westland
and another interview with the
board.
Hamala joined the Farmington
Public Schools in 2004 and has also
worked at Oakland Schools
Intermediate School District and
Huron Valley Schools. She has
experience teaching in special
education and has taught at both
middle school and college levels.
She earned her doctoral degree in
educational leadership and policy
studies atWayne StateUniversity.
In addition to Harmala, board
members interviewed a former
Superintendent of Mt. Clemens
Schools and founder of the Jalen
Rose Leadership Academy
Charles
Muncatchy,
Superintendent of the Xenia
Community School in Xenia, Ohio
Deborah Piotroski, James Larson-
Shidler,
Wayne-Westland
Community Schools deputy super-
intendent for administrative and
business services and the
Superintendent of the Beecher
Community School District Joshua
Talison.
New trash system gets OK
Westland City Council members have
approved the purchase of seven garbage
hauling trucks and 28,000 trash and recycling
cans for the newautomated collection system.
The automated system which uses only
one driver on the truck is currently being
used for the recycling program in the city by
Midwest Sanitation. With the move to the
automated trucks, the current rubbish con-
tractor, Republic Recycling, will no longer be
used.
Officials explained that currently the city
sanitation millage revenue is $800,000 a year
short of the actual refuse hauling costs. The
subsidy has been coming from the general
fund, something that MayorWilliamWild said
needed correcting.
The city will spend $1.7 million for the
trucks from the $8.9 million from the refi-
nancing of Taylor Towers. The sanitation
fund will repay the loan during the next
seven years at 2 percent interest, officials
said.
The city will also purchase gray 64 and 96-
gallon carts and the fuel for the trucks.
Midwest Sanitation will provide labor, insur-
ance and vehicle maintenance, according to
the newagreement.
The city will now provide each residence
with one cart and charge a fee for a second or
third receptacle. Wild said the new system
would benefit from the government discount
the city enjoys on purchasing trucks and fuel.
He estimated those savings at nearly $500,000.
