The Village Theater at Cherry
Hill will feature “US-12: Now and
Then,” a photo series by
Gwendolyn Day and Gregory
Feight, as the photo exhibit this
month.
Free and open to the public
from now through May 29, “US-12:
Now and Then” highlights the
industrial cities, agricultural towns,
churches, schools, and factories
located along Michigan Avenue-the
iconic stretch of highway connect-
ingDetroit andChicago.
Also known as Michigan Avenue
and the Sauk Trail, US-12 is one of
the primary east-west roads across
the central part of Michigan. Used
throughout history and established
as a federal highway in 1825, this
main road got its start as it cut a
trail from Lake Erie to Lake
Michigan and became a popular
route used by French fur traders as
well as Indians. Early American
settlers who crossed the Erie Canal
often landed inDetroit as they trav-
eled to pointswest, such as Chicago
andbeyond.
Along the roads and water ways,
communities sprung up to meet
the needs of travelers and local res-
idents. Travelers arrived on foot,
horseback, stage coach, automo-
bile, rail, and water. They would
welcome a place to stop and rest,
eat a meal, or share a drink.
Several Underground Railroad
safe havens were also located
along US-12. Many freedom seek-
ers traveled this road on their way
to safety.
“US-12: Now and Then” show-
cases awide variety of architecture
that illustrates how mobility
changed the look of US-12 and
sparked an automobile culture that
we still enjoy. Day and Feight's cof-
fee table book containing photos
from the series will also be avail-
able for purchase during the exhib-
it.
This art exhibit at the
Gallery@VT is free and open to the
public from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Monday - Friday and during public
performances at the theater. The
Gallery@VT is closed onholidays.
