Suspect held after standoff
Dog park voting under way
Wayne police have arrested one person
after a hostage situation Monday morning in
an apartment complex onHannanRoad.
Several residents in the building were
evacuated while police attempted to control
the situation, according to reports of the inci-
dent.
Police have refused to release any further
information about the incident which began
at about 8:30 a.m. at an apartment in the
complex, just north of Michigan Avenue.
Wayne police would only say that a person
was being held hostage at one of the apart-
ments. Police established a perimeter
around the building and evacuated neigh-
bors, according to witness reports of the inci-
dent.
Winter-Walker Elementary School which
is located nearby on Michigan Avenue was
also placed on a brief lockdown of about an
hour as a precautionarymeasure.
Police reports indicated that the victim
managed to escape from the apartment and
ran to waiting officers. The suspect in the sit-
uation then came out onto the apartment
porch, but immediately ran back into the
dwellingwhen seeing police, witnesses said.
The suspect was taken into custody "with-
out incident" police said, shortly after 11 a.m.
Police would not reveal the gender of the
suspect or the hostage and the relationship
between the twowas unclear.
There were no reported injuries in the
situation.
Police have not revealed any further
information as the investigation continues
and did not return calls before press time
regarding the incident.
AttwoodParkmay be going to the dogs.
A current online program, Bark For
Your Park, is accepting votes for funding
for the installation or construction of a dog
park. The voting will continue throughout
May at the PetSafe online site. To vote for
Wayne, access the Wayne Parks and
Recreation Facebook page for a link at
http://is.gd/6D9rsrww.petsafe.net.
First prize in the competition is
$100,000 but Wayne is hoping for a smaller,
$25,000 award. That funding could be used
to pay for a 5-foot fence around a designat-
ed area in Attwood Park where the city
razed a house a few years ago. The city
would also install dome dog agility equip-
ment.
The park is already equipped with
grass, trees and shrubs, making it a desir-
able location for a dog park, which would
allow people to take their dogs off leash
for socialization and exercise, according to
officials.
Online voting is allowed every day and
will determine which communities make
it to the next round of voting. Should
Wayne be among the top vote getters, the
Parks and Recreation Department would
be required to produce a video for the
next phase of the competition.
