"The purpose of MayWeek is to

Five

A new ordinance aimed at pro-
tecting dogs from mistreatment
was introduced by members of
the Westland City Council at a
meeting early thismonth.
The ordinance, which defines
and restricts the tethering of dogs,
is a result of discussion with resi-
dents, looking at other cities with
similar ordinances, and is a part
of the Compassionate City cam-
paign that launched in Westland
this year.
Under the ordinance, “tether-
ing” means securing a dog to a
stationary object with a metal
chain or coated steel cable.
Walking a dog on a leash and
securing a dog for temporary
grooming or other professional
services does not fall under the
proposed restrictions.
“Tethering of dogs has been
an issue within our city in the
past. It is important that the
Compassionate City Initiative
aims to aid and protect all living
creatures,” said Westland Mayor
WilliamWild.
If the ordinance is approved by
council members, among other
restrictions, it would be unlawful
to continuously tether a dog for
more than three hours per day;
tether a dog with anything that
weighs more than 10 percent of
the animal's body weight; tether a
dog in an unshaded area in high
temperatures; to fail to provide
appropriate shelter for a dog in
below-40 degree weather and to
tether a dog less than 4 months of
age.
The tethering ordinance will
go on the city council agenda to
be voted on at the regular
Monday, May 19 council meeting.
Residents can learn more about
the new ordinance by contacting
(734)467-3237.
Eddie Baranek, the author of
Taken Alive: The Sights' Rock and
Roll Diary, will make a special
appearance at the Leanna Hicks
Inkster Public Library at 6 p.m.
May 22. The evening will include
storytelling, a musical perform-
ance, book signing and a question
and answer session.
Baranek's visit is part of the
Library of Michigan's 2014
Michigan Notable Authors Tour.
This year, 19 authors whose works
were chosen as 2014 Michigan
Notable Books selections will visit
nearly 50 libraries throughout the
state.
“It's a literary treat to have
Eddie Baranek in our community,
sharing his captivating work with
our friends and neighbors in such
an open, accessible way,” said
Denise Bearre, director of the
Leanna Hicks Inkster Public
Library. “Michigan is home to
some of the best stories, story-
tellers and musicians found any-
where in the country. An author of
Baranek's caliber here, in our
library, will make it an evening to
remember.”
“This year's Michigan Notable
Books delve into wonderfully
diverse topics and offer something
of interest for just about everyone,”
said State Librarian Nancy R.
Robertson. “The tour offers the
opportunity for book enthusiasts in
many corners of the state to join in
the conversation about what con-
stitutes 'great writing' and to hear
from some of the Great Lakes
region'smost beloved authors.”
Baranek has fronted the band
The Sights since 1998. The Sights
has released six full length albums
and toured the USA and Europe
countless times. Baranek is finish-
ing his Bachelor of Arts Degree at
Wayne State University, and is the
Music Director at the Rochester
School of Rock in Rochester. His
Book, Taken Alive: The Sights'
Rock and Roll Tour Diary, details
his 2012 tour of the US and
Europe.
The 2014 Michigan Notable
Books program and tour are made
possible by the support of the
Library of Michigan, the Library of
Michigan Foundation, Michigan
Department of Education, the
Michigan Humanities Council,
Meijer, and the Michigan Center
for the Book. Media Sponsors are
Mittenlit.com, City Pulse, Dome,
Queue Advertising and Tom
GennaraPhotography.

Public Library is located at 2005
