Showing off
Students to display workshop creations
Students from Northville
High School will be showing off
their architectural skills from 6-
8 tonight during the first Student
Project Exhibition for Computer
Aided Design (CAD) and archi-
tectural students.
Students will meet with visi-
tors to answer questions on top-
ics from their inspiration for the
design to the specific materials,
machines and tools used to cre-
ate projects on display at The
Village Workshop in downtown
Northville.
The capstone projects were
chosen, designed and created by
the students as an encore to the
four projects completed during
the 2016/17 school year.
This is the second year for
the project-based program that
Julie Fisette, who teaches the
CAD Engineering ll and CAD
Architectural ll, pioneered with
the help of Timm Carson, direc-
tor of education for The Village
Workshop.
“Students are proud to share
the projects with their class-
mates which inspires peers to
ask questions,”Fisette said.
“This is not your dad's wood-
shop class,” Carson said. “This
environment gives kids the
opportunity to be involved in
many aspects of real-world
applications of learning, such as
math, problem solving, critical
thinking, engineering, a sense of
accomplishment and fun.”
Throughout the school year,
the 11th and 12th grade students
were engaged in the project-
based learning program at The
Village Workshop, where they
were trained by the staff in basic
safety and operation as well as
skill development on various
state of the art machines and
tools in the 23,000 square foot
makerspace in downtown
Northville.
Training began in September
in the wood shop where each of
the students followed plans to
build a tapered leg end-table
using a table saw, miter saw,
band saw, sanding machines
and power hand tools in the
process.
Additional projects include a
set of aluminum dice made on
themillingmachine, as well as a
metal tool caddy using such
tools as a box and pan brake, tin
snips, hand notcher and riveting
tools.
The Shopbot and laser
engraver are popular machines
used by the students, both are
operated by computer software
that students used to make a
woodenmallet.
The laser engraver was used
to personalize the students’
table tops andmallets with their
favorite quote or sport logo.
Plans are in the process to
add more students and projects
to the project-based program at
TheVillageWorkshop to include
other areas of skill development
such as electronics, textiles, and
robotics. Carson said he is excit-
ed about the opportunities and
options that programs like this
offer students who thrive when
exposed to this style of learning.
“Our goal is to provide the
tools, technology and the educa-
tion to equip our youth with
skills to be the innovators of the
future.”
The Village Workshop is
located at 455 E. Cady St. in
Northville.
Northville High School students will show of their architectural design
skills at an exhibition at The Village Workshop tonight.
The repair of streets in the
Harbour Pointe subdivision in
Belleville will depend on the
willingness of the 95 property
owners to help pay the $1.7 mil-
lion expense.
After two meetings earlier
thismonth regarding the needed
repairs, William and Beth
Hutter agreed to circulate a peti-
tion in the subdivision to deter-
mine the willingness of resi-
dents to pay for the 1-mile of
repairs through a Special
Assessment District (SAD).
Regulations regarding funding
repairs through a SAD would
require that 60 percent of the
affected homeowners agree to
make payments through their
tax bills for the repairs.
The city would borrow the
funds and the homeowners
repay the loan amount in install-
ments based on the amount of
frontage affecting their property.
During the meeting, Mayor
Kerreen Conley noted that a city
wide examination of roadways
performed by experts from
Hennessey Engineers, deter-
mined that $10million in repairs
was needed throughout the com-
munity. The engineers did agree
that the roads inHarbour Pointe
were the most in need of repair,
she said. Conley recused herself
from any further discussion of
the issue as she is a resident of
Harbour Pointe.
Dividing the repair work into
specific areas with SADs would
be one financing mechanism to
accomplish some of the neces-
sary repairs.
After much discussion and
explanation regarding the tech-
nical and engineering aspects of
the road repairs. Three options
were under consideration for
Harbour Pointe, a complete
removal and replacement of the
concrete in affected areas was
recommended. Those repairs
and replacements should have a
life expectancy of 30-40 years,
according to engineering
experts.
The cost for each property
owner would be $10,089.47
which could be paid over 10
years at a rate of $1,121.05 annu-
ally at 4-percent interest. The
assessment would have to be
paid in full should the property
be sold, officials said.
Several other financing meth-
ods were discussed during the
meeting but the final decision
was to circulate the petitions to
determine the willingness of
Harbour Pointe residents to
agree to aSAD.
The homeowners will be
responsible for the $500-$600 per
property required for the
detailed engineering studies
necessary to determine the final
cost of the repairs and replace-
ment of the roads.
