moral, professional and right thing
to do. To have kept this quiet in an
attempt to control the situation and
avoid the inevitable questions and
concern may have been far more
convenient and much less trouble-
some for the township and the pub-
lic safety department.
Van Buren did the right thing,
however, and handled the situation
as prescribed by law, and took the
extra step of going public to warn
people of the existence of the virus,
cautioning them to be careful and
seek medical help should there be
any question of another case of this
dreaded infection.
The department managed to
protect the privacy of the EMTwho
was infected and that of the origi-
nal patient, while still warning the
public that a lot of hand washing
and sanitizing was in order for the
next 30 days or so. The township
also hired an outside contractor
who specializes in infectious dis-
ease sanitation, to come in and dis-
infect the fire station, another nec-
essary and required step.
There are, unfortunately, munic-
ipalities where this public informa-
tion and warning to residents
might not have been the case.
There are local communities
where this might have been down-
played and the laws regarding such
a situation and danger given only
lip service.
We applaud the actions of Van
Buren Township in this situation.
This seems to be the latest evi-
dence of a new policy of open and
direct communication and trans-
parency in township government
and are action that residents
should applaud and appreciate.
We knowwe do.
opened up and erected an eight-
man tent in the camping depart-
ment and told children passing by
they could come in if they would
bring pillows and blankets from
the bedding department and
snacks from the grocery aisle.
Parents of the 20 children who
joined in have filed complaints,
two of them regarding children
with food allergies.
8. March 10: When a clerk asked if
he could help your granddaughter,
she began crying and screamed,
“Just leaveme alone. You areNOT
my uncle. Go away. Don't touch
me.” Police were called resulting
in another lawsuit regarding the
store responsibility in a false
arrest of the employee.
March 12: Your grandson looked
right into the security camera and
used it as amirrorwhile he picked
his nose.
10. March. 12: While handling
guns in the Sports Department,
your granddaughter asked the
clerk where the antidepressants
were.
11. March. 13: The three of you
darted around the store suspi-
ciously while loudly humming the
Mission Impossible theme bran-
dishing realistic-looking weapons
fromthe toy department.
12. March 14: In the auto depart-
ment, all three of you practiced
your 'Madonna look' by using dif-
ferent sizes of funnels.
13. March 18: Your granddaughter
hid in a women's plus-size clothing
rack andwhen customers browsed
through, yelled 'PICK ME! PICK
ME!'
14. March 22: When an announce-
ment came over the loud speaker,
your grandson assumed the fetal
position on the floor and
screamed, OH NO! IT'S THOSE
VOICESAGAIN!
15. The same day he took a box of
condoms to the checkout clerk and
askedwhere the fitting roomwas.
16. OnMarch 23, your granddaugh-
ter went into a fitting room, shut
the door, waited awhile, and then
yelled very loudly, “Hey! There's
no toilet paper inhere.” One of the
sales associates fainted and cus-
tomers avoided the department
for the rest of the day.
Please do not return to the
storeunder any circumstances.
Sincerely,
Targetmanagement
(Seriously, see what I mean?
Some people have no sense of
humor. The kids and I have agreed
we won't go back without a good
disguise, but we did order six truck-
loads of organic fertilizer delivered
to the main entrance of the store the
day I got the letter.)
