Police arrest suspect in in multiple home robberies
Ironman named in Canton
Mayor offering scholarships
The Van Buren Township
Police Department has arrested a
suspect in a series of home inva-
sions and robberies which took
place during the past month in
theHaggerty subdivision.
Brian Bernard Baker, 17, of
Van Buren Township was arrest-
ed the morning of April 12 after
officers received information
from all of the crime scenes that
indicated the perpetrator lived in
the area. Van Buren officers were
also able to use evidence collect-
ed at the scenes of the crimes and
data obtained from a neighboring
jurisdiction to devise an investiga-
tive plan in the situation, accord-
ing to police reports of the inci-
dent.
Based on that information, offi-
cers observed Baker leaving his
residence on foot apparently
headed toward the Haggerty sub-
division. The patrol officers kept
visual contact with the suspect
until undercover units could
relieve them and employed a
rolling surveillance, according to
police reports.
Undercover officers and plain-
clothes detectives maintained
close surveillance of the suspect
while patrol officers secured an
outer perimeter to prevent the
suspect's escape.
The undercover officers even-
tually witnessed the suspect leav-
ing a subdivision home in posses-
sion of stolen property taken from
thehouse.
After questioning by detectives,
the suspect confessed to four
home invasions in the subdivision
and when the investigative divi-
sion served a search warrant at
the suspect's home, they recov-
ered additional property which
had been reported stolen from
homes along with illegal nar-
cotics.
Baker was arraigned on one
count of home invasion, second
degree, with other charges pend-
ing in 34thDistrict Court.
He was given a $25,000 cash
bond.
Baker will face a preliminary
examination at the 34th District
Court onApril 24.
The Ironman Award in the Canton
Township Fire Department went to Frank
Rehling this year.
Rehling has the distinction of responding
to 717 fires and medical calls last year, more
than any other of the 61 firefighter para-
medics in theCantondepartment.
The award was presented to Rehling dur-
ing an April 3 ceremony at the Village
Theater at Cherry Hill. This was the 14th
annual awards ceremony for the depart-
ment.
Rehling received a standing ovation from
the crowd which included Public Safety
Director Todd Mutchler, former public safe-
ty directors John Santomauro and Patrick
Nemecek and former Fire Chief Michael
Rorabacher.
Fire Chief Joshua Meier presented the
award after praising Rehling's work ethic
and contributions to the department.
"Firefighter Rehling has been thorough,
conscientious, ambitious and enthusiastic,
thereby encouraging others to become more
proficient, motivated and involved," Meier
said. "By his outstanding service, firefighter
Rehling has contributed greatly to the
accomplishment of the Canton Fire
Department and upheld the finest traditions
of theCantonDepartment of Public Safety."
Rehling works at Fire Station 2 in the
township, located on Warren Road between
Haggerty andLilley.
Numerous firefighters, police officers,
dispatchers and some civilians were hon-
ored with awards for their efforts to help
residents in distress and in life-threatening
situations.
Rehling, whoworked as a dispatcherwith
the department for 10 years, became a full-
time firefighter in 2011 after attending

Lions mark White Cane Week
There will be a pride of Lions prowl-
ing throughout the area as the civic
group marks White Cane Week April 26
throughMay 5.
Canton Lions club members will be
attempting to collect donations at the L.
George's Coney Island on Michigan
Avenue, Holiday Market at Lilley Road
and Cherry Hill and Wal-Mart on Ford
Road near Lotz. They will also be found
in the streets of Belleville, since
Belleville does not have an official
Lions club.
Canton members are assisting peo-
ple in both communities during these
difficult economic times, noted club
President LarryWegrzyn.
The club is called upon to purchase
many pairs of eyeglasses for children
whose parents cannot afford to buy
them and also sponsors a scholarship
program which allows sight-impaired
students to attend college, he said.
These programs along with Penrickton
Center for Blind and Handicapped
Children, Michigan Eye Bank, Leader
Dog School for the Blind or a company
which prepares books in braille are just
a few examples of efforts the club helps
fund.
According to Wegrzyn, it takes many
fund raising events for the Lions Club
to assist those in need. He said the club
organizes fund raising events such as a
euchre tournament, pancake breakfast
at the Canton Liberty Fest and a corn
roast in August during the Canton
VillageFaire.
“The Lions are dependent on the
public's contributions to complete all
these worthy projects. We encourage
the public to support our efforts and
contributewhat they can,” he said.
“We're beginning our White Cane
Week which is our spring project allow-
ing the Lions to renew with the public
the various needs the blind and hearing
impaired have in life. It may be a low
vision reader or a cataract operation
for the sight impaired. The hearing
impaired need hearing aids or a hear-
ing phone which allow them to have
contact with their family and friends,”
”
Wegrzyn said.
