Collected water delivered to Flint center
Tai Chi classes offered by Wayne Senior Services
Benefit set for businessmen
The small mountain of cases
and huge stack of gallon con-
tainers of water donated by
Westland residents were deliv-
ered to beleaguered residents
of Flint last Saturday.
In January, Mayor William
Wild asked Westland residents
to help as part of his
Compassionate City Initiative.
The response, he said, was
nearly overwhelming.
“The response from the com-
munity was truly humbling,”
commented Wild. “In a short
period of time, residents donat-
ed more than 2,500 cases and
800 gallons of water at Westland
CityHall.”
The donations came from
Westland employees, business-
es, civic groups and religious
organizations, along with local
residents.
While the collection was
exceptionally successful, it did
create a dilemma: How to get
thewater toFlint residents.
The United Auto Workers
(UAW) and the Westland
Jaycees stepped up and mem-
bers volunteered to load and
deliver the water to the Hands
of Love City of Refuge Center in
Flint, a distribution center for
bottledwater inFlint.
“Local 900 UAW has been
working with Hands of Love
City of Refuge Center in Flint
on our own collection efforts,”
commented
Westland
Councilman Bill Johnson, chair
of theUAW.
“When we heard Mayor Wild
was looking for a place to deliv-
er the water the city collected,
we thought it would be a great
fit.”
The Jaycees also offered
their help almost immediately.
“The Jaycees continue to
stay committed to helping the
citizens of Flint during this
domestic water crisis,” com-
mented Jim Hart, chairman of
theWestlandArea Jaycees. “We
are happy towork alongside the
City of Westland and UAW
Local 900 in this effort. We
hope to have several chapters
involved in this effort from
across the state, including the
Westland Area Jaycees and the
BurtonAreaChapter.”
“I would like to thank every-
one for their amazing support
in these collection efforts and a
special thank you to the UAW
Local 900 and the Westland
Area Jaycees for helping to
move this sizable contribution,”
Wild said.
“Westland has, once again,
proven to be Michigan's most
compassionate city.”
Is it ever too late to beginmar-
tial arts lessons?
Not if the marital art under
consideration is Tai Chi, often
described as meditation in
motion. The mind-body practice
which originated in China is con-
sidered by many to have value in
treating or preventing several
healthproblems
Tai Chi is a low-impact, slow-
motion exercise performed with-
out pause through a series of
motions named for animal
actions - for example, “white
crane spreads its wings” or mar-
tial arts moves, such as “box both
ears.”
Participants move, breathe
deeply and naturally, and focus
their attention on bodily sensa-
tions. Tai Chi differs from other
types of exercise in several
respects. The movements are
usually circular and never
forced, the muscles are relaxed
rather than tensed, the joints are
not fully extended or bent, and
connective tissues are not
stretched. Tai Chi can be easily
adapted for anyone, from the
most fit to people confined to
wheelchairs or recovering from
surgery, according to Harvard
Women'sHealthWatch
Some studies have shown that
Tai Chi can help lower blood
pressure and lead to a drop in
cholesterol levels, notedWebMD.
An eight-week series of begin-
ner Tai Chi classes will be
offered through City of Wayne,
The Senior Alliance and The
Older MiChiganians Act at
HYPE Recreation Center begin-
ning at 10 a.m. May 3.
Intermediary and Advanced
classes will begin at 11 a.m. and
continue from May 3 through
June 21. The cost for either of the
eight-week series of classes is
$52.
For more information or to
register for the classes, contact
the Wayne Senior Services office
at (734) 721-7460.
HYPE Recreation Center is
located at 4635 Howe Road at
the corner of Annapolis in
Wayne.
It has been one year since John
and Bill VerHines, owners of
GRAMCO Furniture Restoration
on Michigan Avenue in Wayne
were both critically injured in a
traffic accident caused by a young
drunk driver.
Both men suffered traumatic
brain injuries on April 29, 2015.
Their injuries require intense
therapy and medical attention
which means a never-ending
financial need. Because of uncoop-
erative insurance carriers, the
family is facing a severe financial
crisis.
To defray some of the mounting
expenses, the Restoring VerHines'
Legacy Spaghetti Fundraiser is
planned from 6-8 p.m. April 29 at
the First United Methodist
Church, 3 Town Square, across
fromtheWaynePost Office.
Meals, which include all-you-
can-eat spaghetti, garlic bread and
salad, can be purchased for $10 for
adults and $5 for children younger
than 6. Gluten-free dinner options
will be available and there will
also be a bake sale.
Every dollar donated will help
support the family including pay-
ing for monthly rent and utilities,
medical appointments and thera-
pies not covered by insurance, a
spokesman said in a prepared
statement.
The fundraiser is being sup-
ported by the Taking Action for
Friends, Family and Youth
(TAFFY) Foundation, a 501c3, non-
profit organization, that strives to
improve the quality of life for
Michigan families burdened with
hardship. TAFFY carries out this
mission by providing financial
assistance and hope to those strug-
gling for amyriad of reasons.

2 charged with arson
Police have arrested and
charged two youths with arson
in theApril 6 fire at the former
bakery building at the Eloise
hospital property inWestland.
Trevor Bauer, 18, of Wayne,
is facing charges of third-
degree arson and possession
of burglary tools. A 16-year-old
Westland youth was also
charged in the incident but his
name is being withheld due to
his age.
The bakery building was a
total loss and when firefight-
ers arrived on the scene at
about 2 p.m. they observed
flames already at the roof of
the building. Fire investiga-
tors said it appeared the blaze
started on an upper floor and
were hindered in their
attempts to extinguish the
blaze. The bakery building
was constructed in 1905 and
shut down in 1960.
During his arraignment, a
not-guilty pleas was entered
for Bauer and he was given a
$10,000.10 percent bond. His
preliminary court hearing is
set for April 21.
