“I think that starts with the family mem-
bers having a conversation with their loved
ones that the police are there to help and
canbe trusted,” Sullivan said.
The event took place more frequently in
the 1990s, he said, with safety officials
working to make it more regular, generally
twice a year. Its focus is Canton residents,
he noted, although othersmay attend.
“Canton Public Library's mission is to
connect with our community. The
Community Connection Day is a great
opportunity for families to get to learn
about the variety of programming the
library offers all year round. Count Me In
Special Needs Story-time is a program
funded by a grant from the Dollar General
Literacy Foundation. It's a sensory-friendly,
story-time filled with picture books, pre-
school songs and simple sign language
especially designed for patrons of all ages
and abilities with their families and care-
givers. The program is offered September -
June in the community room on Saturdays
from 4- 4:30 p.m., no registration required,”
explained Canton Information Services
Librarian Deborah Sobczak. “Check our
program calendar for our next session at

“The purpose of the Canton
Therapeutic Recreation program is to pro-
vide classes, programs and events for indi-
viduals with disabilities. We partneredwith
Public Safety to dispel fears that individu-
alswithdisabilities havewith the lights and
noises and uniformed officers and vice
versa,” noted Canton Township Recreation
Specialist JenniferGirard.
“The purpose of theCantonTherapeutic
Recreation program is to provide classes,
programs and events for individuals with
disabilities. We partnered with public safe-
ty to dispel fears that individuals with dis-
abilities havewith the lights andnoises.
Girard said the event allows families the
opportunity to see a variety of programs
and activities, calling most “hidden gems
that families don't know about.” The
Therapeutic Recreation Program at
Canton Leisure Services provides classes,
programs and camps ranging from fitness
classes to holiday parties as well as swim
lessons, social trips and all day summer
camps.
“We feel that individuals with disabili-
ties should have the same opportunity to be
healthy, learn new skills and be with
friends that everyone else does,” Girard
added.

(GFOA)
Distinguished
Budget
Presentation Award for the fifth
consecutive year.
Northville Township received
the award for satisfying national-
ly recognized guidelines for
effective budget presentation
which assess how well the town-
ship budget serves as a policy
document, a financial plan, an
operations guide, and a commu-
nications device. Budget docu-
ments must be rated "proficient"
in all four categories - and in the
14 mandatory criteria within
those categories - to receive the
award.
The Northville Township
focus during the 2018 budget
process was centered on vision
with a theme of Open
Government Initiatives.
The board of trustees' vision
to engage low-cost, innovative
approaches to connect township
government with citizens result-
ed in the launch of a first citizen-
oriented mobile application
designed to provide easy access
to township government includ-
ing high demand interactive
online services. The 2018 budget
builds on the open government
initiative platform, while striking
a balance between aligning
financial resources with long-
term service level objectives,
according to a prepared state-
ment fromthe township.
The award represents a signif-
icant achievement by Northville
Township and reflects the com-
mitment of the board of trustees
and staff to meeting the highest
principles in governmental budg-
eting, the release continued.
Northville Township was one of
only 33 communities in Michigan
to be recognized, out of nearly
1,800 cities, villages and town-
ships.
When the award is granted to
an entity, a Certificate of
Recognition is also presented to
the individual designated as
being primarily responsible for
having achieved the award.
