Several physicians and special-
ists affiliated with Oakwood
Healthcare, Inc. are again reaching
out to the Canton community for a
freehealth fair.
The 11th annual event, which
takes place on April 14 at the
Hindu Temple on Cherry Hill
Road, is sponsored by theMichigan
Association of Physicians of Indian
Origin (MAPI), the temple, and
Oakwood Annapolis Hospital in
Wayne.
“Since 1953 our way of doing
business has been not to wait, but
to touch the lives of the people we
serve before illness, injury or bad
information bring them into the
hospital,” said Rick Hillbom, chief
operation officer of outpatient
services for Oakwood. “Our clini-
cians and administrators have
always taken the initiative to find
out what preventive health servic-
es and education our neighbors in
each community might need, and
then go out directly and personally,
into the neighborhoods and neigh-
borhood institutions, to deliver
those services andprograms.”
The health fair will feature
more than a dozendoctors fromthe
Oakwood Healthcare System who
will provide a wide range of servic-
es and free screenings and consul-
tations. There will be blood pres-
sure checks, hearing tests and
blood screenings provided-all free
of cost. Attendees can meet with a
primary care physician and follow-
up with specialists at the event,
such as cardiologists, urologists,
endocrinologists, internists, oph-
thalmologists and dentists, among
others. They can also sign up for a
diagnostic blood screening onApril
7 and have the results discussed
with themonApril 14.
Sarju Shah, MD, an Oakwood
doctor with a practice on Haggerty
near Ford Road, said he has been
involved in the event since 1995.
“The value to the community is
immeasurable, especially in this
economy,” said Shah. “The people
who attend get good care.”
Chandrakant Pujara, MD, anoth-
er Oakwood doctor who has long
been affiliated with the event,
agreed. He said the health fair is
designed to help people identify
potential health risks before they
become a problem.
“I'm very passionate about
health education and prevention,”
he said. “An ounce of prevention is
better than a pound of cure.
Prevention iswhat we need.”
The health fair takes place from
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hindu
Temple in Canton at 44955 Cherry
Hill Road and is limited to the first
350 registrants. To register, call the
temple at 734.981.8730 or visit
www.mapiusa.org.
bers concentrate on solving the
problems of and running the city
rather than their own political
ambitions. We think that's solid
advice.
We also agree with the council
woman who suggested that if the
mayor does not intend to step
aside, then he should come to work
anddohis job.
The long shadow of the investi-
gation is going to be challenging,
we know. But we have seen the cal-
iber of most of the city employees
and those who staff city hall. They
all appear to have the moral, per-
sonal and psychological where-
withal to perform their jobs as they
didprior to the investigation.

der awarded the contract and the
work begun. Nobody would have
considered the value of the sale of
the salvage or that anything of any
value remained at the site much
less that it could pay for the needed
work.
The department heads in
Northville Township took the time
to think through the situation and
propose a different way to accom-
plish their goals without costing the
township, or the taxpayers, any
money.
That seems like the way things
ought to be looked at and done. Just
because things have always and
usually been done by bidding a con-
tract for thework, doesn't mean that
there isn't another way to get the
jobdone.
This arrangement took some cre-
ative thinking which paid off for
everyone involved.
Nicework.

Chain reaction
According to witnesses, a motorist ran a red light at Edward
Hines Drive and Wilcox Road at about 2:56 p.m. last Thursday,
causing a three-vehicle crash and injuring a 19-month-old tod-
dler. A motorcyclist was also involved in the crash. The impact
and chain reaction propelled a camper top from an older model
pick-up truck over a guard rail and onto the grass embankment.
Huron Valley Ambulance (HVA) was first on the scene, followed
by paramedics from Plymouth Township Community Fire
Department dispatched to the scene. The child, who was still
strapped in her car seat when the ambulance arrived, appeared
to have an eye laceration and was transported to a local hospi-
tal by HVA.
