The Eagle 04 07 16 - page 3

A 14-year veteran has been honored
as theWaynePoliceOfficer of theYear.
Abraham Hughes was chosen for the
honor by a citation board based on nomi-
nations from members of the depart-
ment and recently accepted his awards
at ameeting of theWayneCityCouncil.
He was presented with citations from
the city, Wayne County and other civic
organizations.
Hughes joined theWayne department
in 2002 and in recognizing him this year,
the department noted two particular
incidents during his time with the
department.
In February last year, Hughes
responded to a robbery at the Chase
Bank branch in Wayne. He was able to
determine that descriptions of the rob-
ber were inaccurate and by reviewing
photos was able to provide a correct
description of the suspect which eventu-
ally led to the apprehension and arrest
of the criminal.
In September of last year, Hughes
responded to reports of a homicide that
had just occurred at a home on the 4000
block of Chamberlain. Hughes, the first
officer on the scene, encountered the
suspect and was able to contain the situ-
ation until other officers arrived to take
him into custody for the killing of his
step-grandfatherwithan axe.
“Officer Hughes displayed great
courage and professionalism by putting
his own safety in jeopardy and taking a
violent felon into custody,” said Wayne
Police Chief Allen Maciag during the
official recognition of his honor. Former
Wayne Mayor Al Haidous who now
serves as a county commissioner pre-
sented the officer with an official procla-
mation of appreciation and honor from
the county.
“It's a great honor to come back as a
citizen and county commissioner to
showmy appreciation for a police officer
who always stands up to serve the com-
munity,” said Haidous, D-Wayne. “I want
to show my appreciation. I've always
been proud of our public safety - they're
second to none.”

The City of Westland and the
Michigan Humane Society are
seeking justice for a family who
lost their dogs in an incident of
robbery and arson.
TheMichiganHumane Society
Cruelty Investigation Department
is offering a $2,500 reward for
information leading to the arrest
and conviction of the individuals
responsible for burning three
dogs alive in a Westland home
after a burglary on Tuesday,
March 29. The fire occurred in
the 38000 block of Warren around
2 p.m. The Michigan Humane
Society Cruelty Investigation
Department is also offering assis-
tance in the investigation.
“This crime is despicable on
many levels,” said Matthew
Pepper, president and CEO of the
Michigan Humane Society. “Not
only was a family robbed of their
belongings and displaced by a
fire, they have to suffer the loss of
their three beloved dogs. The
dogs were trapped with no way to
escape the flames and suffered
greatly before ultimately perish-
ing.”
“The City of Westland and the
Westland Fire Department appre-
ciates the assistance on this case
from the Michigan Humane
Society,” commented Mayor
William Wild. “This was a truly
tragic situation and we urge the
public to come forward with any
information regarding this
crime.”
The dogs' bodies have been
transferred to the Michigan
Humane Society Berman Center
for Animal Care in Westland for
examination.
