Westland Mayor William R.
Wild has been honored with the
Southeast Michigan Council of
Government (SEMCOG) Regional
Ambassador Award, the highest
honor given to individuals who
contribute to making Southeast
Michigan a better place to live,
work and raise a family.
Wild has been a constant voice
for SEMCOG and its regional
work. He has chaired the
Legislative Policy Task Force
and has set an example for the
redevelopment of vacant build-
ings, according to a statement.
SEMCOG officials noted that
Wild led the transformation of an
empty big-box retail store into a
state- of-the-art city hall, a project
that has received numerous
awards. His efforts as a voice for
local government collaboration,
working to identify opportunities
to partner with neighboring com-
munities to share staff and jointly
offer emergency dispatch servic-
eswere also laudedby the group.
“We appreciate the work that
Mayor Wild does to improve
Southeast Michigan,” comment-
ed SEMCOG Executive Director
Kathleen Lomako. “This award
acknowledges and thanks him
for his great work on behalf of
our region.”
“On behalf of the City of
Westland,
I
appreciate
SEMCOG's regional perspective
and vision and it makes me
proud to work with them,” Wild
said.
“I am grateful for the work
they do for the region and for
helping me to become a better
public servant.”
Westland residents now have
the opportunity to actively partic-
ipate in plans for development in
their community.
The city has launched a web-
page that includes two short sur-
veys for residents who can access
the site and let their opinions be
known. The website, cityofwest-
land.com, under Master Plan,
also contains information about
meeting dates and updates on
projects throughout the planning
process, according to a statement
from the office of Mayor William
Wild.
The city master plan is not a
rigid ordinance or local statute
but is a guide to be used by the
community, particularly mem-
bers of the city planning commis-
sion, zoning board of appeals and
the city council as policies and
decisions that will affect the phys-
ical development of the commu-
nity. As time progresses, the mas-
ter plan must remain flexible to
adapt to changes, according to
the statement. A review of the
master plan is mandated every
five years by state statute.
Westland currently has a mas-
ter plan steering committee and
members have met several times
to start shaping policies, goals
and objectives. The latest master
plan update includes two small
area projects, the Historic Village
Park Plan and the Norwayne
Plan. Each of these plans will be
designed to guide development,
redevelopment and investment
in these specific areas.
“We held meetings on each of
these area plans in the month of
March,” commented Wild. “The
feedback we received was
informative and helpful and
these surveys will give residents
that missed the public meetings a
chance to participate in the
process.”
All information related to the
master plan process will be post-
ed on thewebsite.
We appreciate the work
that Mayor Wild does
to improve Southeast Michigan.
