The Van Buren Township
Fire Department will conduct
the third Citizen's Fire Academy
class beginning this month. The
nine-week academy meets from
6:30-9:30 p.m. Wednesday nights
from April 30 through June 13.
There are three Saturday classes
from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. on
May 2, June 6 and June 13.
The classes afford partici-
pants the opportunity to learn
the tactics and strategies
involved in firefighting and res-
cue operations through both
classroom and hands-on ses-
sions.
“The academy exists to pro-
vide insight into the inner work-
ings of the Van Buren Township
Fire Department and to better
inform the community it serves
about themultitude of services it
provides, according to Fire Chief
Dan Besson. Participants will
have the opportunity to receive
CPRcertification andAED train-
ing, as well as the knowledge of
how to react positively in the
event of a fire or medical emer-
gency and how to select and use
the proper fire extinguisher.
Highlights of the class include
live fire training and the oppor-
tunity to “work” a shift and ride-
along on emergency calls, he
said.
All academy instructors are
members of the Van Buren
Township Fire Department and
have attained aminimumcertifi-
cation of State of Michigan
Firefighter II and, in most cases,
much higher levels of certifica-
tion and instruction have been
attained, according to Battalion
Chief RonFolks.
“These highly qualified per-
sonnel are committed to provid-
ing information to participants
in a professional manner, with
the intent of providing individu-
alized instruction to every par-
ticipant. A realistic balance of
classroom time and practical
exercises makes the course both
informative and interesting. To
this end, class size is limited,
allowing for good interaction
between instructors and partici-
pants while maintaining a safe
learning environment,” Folks
said in a prepared release.
The Citizens Fire Academy is
open to anyone 18 or older who
lives or works in Van Buren
Township and has no prior
felony convictions. A routine
police background check is part
of the selection process. Classes
are limited to 20 students and
this is a free program.
Applications are available at
Van Buren Fire Station One,
45400 Hull Road, fire station
number two 7981 Belleville
Road and the Van Buren
Township Police Station,46425
TylerRoad.
All applications must be
returned to fire sStation one or
two by Friday April 17. For addi-
tional information, email Folks
at
or
Besson at dbesson@vanburen-
mi.org or call (734) 699-8916.

Romulus student proves college star
Entries now being accepted for Northville art show
Cierra Bond, a 5-foot, 9-inch tall
freshman shooting guard has
helped lead the South Georgia
Technical College Lady Jets to a
17th place seed in the National
Junior

Athletic
Association (NJCAA) Division I
women's national basketball tour-
nament.
Bond, who played at Romulus

Jets in the championship game
and scored nine points and had
five rebounds in that Lady Jets'
win. She earned a starting position
for the Lady Jets toward the end of
the season as a freshman. She has
started the last seven games,
which allowed the Lady Jets to
capture the National Junior
College Athletic Association
Region XVII tournament title and
the District J championship on the
road to theDivision I women's bas-
ketball national tournament. She
is averaging 8.6 points per game
this season aswell as 4.5 rebounds.
“Both Cierra Bond and
Deanna Williams were able to
come in as freshman and make a
difference in our program,” said
South Georgia Technical College
Athletic Director and Lady Jets
women's basketball coach James
Frey. “We had only one starter
returning from our 30 - 5 perform-
ance last season so these girls had
some big shoes to fill.”
Cierra is shooting 44.5 percent
from the floor and is a 28.9 percent
three-point shooter. She has also
made 64 percent of her free
throws, saidFrey.
The Lady Jets are currently 27 -

Darton State College in the
NJCAA Region XVII tournament
to advance to the District J compe-
tition.
