Plymouth Township is offer-
ing professional training in CPR -
C a r d i o - P u l m o n a r y
Resuscitation, AED - Automated
External Defibrillator use and
BasicLifeSupport.
The township fire station is a
certified American Heart
Association training site and
graduates of the free classes will
receive an identification card
and certificate. There is a nomi-
nal fee for books and CPR cards
for non-residents of Plymouth
Township.
Students will be presented
with hands-on experience that
could possibly save the life of an
individual in sudden cardiac
arrest. Cardiac arrest can hap-
pen at any age and each person
when trained in CPR has the
capability to save a life, accord-
ing tomedical experts.
American Heart Association
(AHA) statistics list sudden car-
diac arrest as the leading cause
of death in adults withmore than
325,000 cases reported annually.
Nearly 250,000 people in the U.S.
die of sudden cardiac arrest each
year. The condition occurs when
the heart stops beating, a condi-
tion usually caused by a disrup-
tion in the heart's electrical sig-
nal. Only about 5 percent of vic-
tims survive because there is
only a 5-minute resuscitation
windowwhere CPRor electronic
defibrillation can be delivered
before deathoccurs.
According to medical experts
and the AHA, a trained citizen
first-responder who is able to
immediately start CPR on a car-
diac arrest victim could increase
survival rates by more than 40
percent.
The next class is scheduled
for April 15. Advance registration
is required. Call the Plymouth
Township Fire Department
administrative offices at (734)
354-3221 to register prior to class-
es.
A new $50 million investment
is set for Plymouth Township with
the construction of an 80,000-
square-foot manufacturing facility
at 41144Concept Dr.
The building will become the
home of Oelikon Metco Inc. a
Switzerland-based industrial and
technology solutions group. The
company will produce advanced
titanium alloys and high-end ther-
mal spray powders used by auto-
motive, aerospace, agricultural
and medical consumers. The
alloys and sprays will be packaged
and shipped fromthe newsite.
Township Supervisor Kurt
Heise said he is thrilled that
Oelikon decided to build in the
township adding there is an explo-
sion in the growth of the 3D print-
er industry.
“Today they're plastic but
tomorrow they will be metal,”
Heise said explaining the 3D
printer process and the parts they
produce.
The materials with the specific
properties needed to print 3D
automotive and aerospace compo-
nents are in limited supply. The
subject materials, a much-needed
component, are made from metal
powders such as those Oelikon
will be producing. The 3Dprinters
are used to replicate high-quality
parts.
“They're going to expand our
tax base and are they're a terrific
addition. They're expanding the
international aspect of doing busi-
ness here. We're a destination…
and we're open for business,”
Heise added.
Heise said the manufacturer
could bring between 70 and 100
jobs to the community.
Completion of the newbuilding
is expected in the spring of 2018.
