A local 'Big Family' is getting
some needed help from the Canton
Newcomers andNeighbors Club.
Big Family of Michigan is a non-
profit organization that serves the
needs of foster children and young
adults. Those efforts are funded by
donations and fundraisers like the
one the Canton Newcomers and
Neighbors Club members are plan-
ning nextmonth.
Club members will host the
annual Mom2Mom sale from 8:30
a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday, April 5 at
the Summit on the Park Banquet
Center 46000 Summit Pkwy,
Canton. Proceeds from the sale
this year will benefit Big Family of
Michigan. New and gently used
maternity, baby and children's
items, including furniture and play
equipment, will be offered at 50 dif-
ferent tables sponsored by mem-
bers of the community. Admission
is $1 for anyone over 12 years of
age.
“A few years ago, I followed an
issue of 18 year old youths aging
out of the foster care system,” said
Noreen Rybar, president of the
Canton Newcomers and Neighbors
Club. “It seemed absurd to me. I
then read with interest about the
work of BigFamily of Michigan and
the support they give to these
young adults. It was alsowonderful
to learn that Canton's own Javon
Coppins was the recipient of a
$1000 scholarship from Big Family
to attend the Michigan Institute of
Aviation Technology. Our board
was pleased to choose Big Family
of Michigan to benefit from our
annual fundraiser.”
“We feel very fortunate to be
chosen as this years' charity,” said
Jeanne Fowler, founder of Big
Family of Michigan. “The funds we
receive from the Canton
Newcomers and Neighbors Club
are greatly needed and will sup-
port our ongoing youth programs.
The sale is also a wonderful oppor-
tunity for young mothers to get
great deals on items they need as
their families grow.”
Formed more than 40 years ago,
the Canton Newcomers and
Neighbors Club is a social and
charitable group. The club's motto
“where neighbors become friends,”
sums up their goal of gathering the
community together at hosted fami-
ly events such as: Book Clubs,
Playgroups, Couples' Social, Let's
Do Dinner, Walking, Chick Flick
Nights, and others. Showroom of
Elegance in Canton is the major
sponsor of the club..
Carrie Pollaccia is the chairper-
son of the April fundraiser and
additional sponsorship support is
provided by Dave & Busters.

rience. Officers see people at some of the
most emotional and most stressful times of
their lives, be it as victims or suspects. This
type of interaction shows people that these
officers are people, too.
This, we think, is community policing at
its best. These officers are demonstrating to
the residents they have helped, to the neigh-
bors of those helped, to the students and to
the entire city that they are a part of the com-
munity. They are showing that they really do
have an interest in the well being of the
neighborhoods, whether it's protecting the
residents from crime, or helping those who
may just need a hand during some bad
times.
These are the acts and the conduct we
would like everyone to recall and remember
as the trials of those who didn't take their
oath to protect and serve seriously become
front page news again. The Romulus Police
Department is a force of fine men and
women who go the extra mile to serve and
protect their community.
They should be judged by what they do
today and the efficiency and dedication they
display as a department, not by the salacious
conduct of thosewho preceded them.
