First ‘Officer of the Year’ honored by city
PatrolmanMatthewReese is the
first recipient of the City of
Romulus Police Department
Officer of theYear Award.
The three-year veteran was
selected unanimously for the
recognition by the police command
staff and was introduced by Chief
of Police Robert Dickerson at the
regular meeting of the city council
last week.
Dickerson said the candidate
selection process was based on the
police officer “who most exempli-
fies integrity, courage, productivity,
professionalism, attitude and work
ethic.” Besides meeting this crite-
ria, most importantly, Dickerson
said, Reese “has used the depart-
ment'smission statement as a guide
to providing outstanding and hon-
orable police services.”
The chief unveiled the new mis-
sion statement as well: “It is the
mission of the Romulus Police
Department to protect the lives and
property of the community we
serve, to reduce the occurrences
and fear of crime, and to enhance
the safety of the public while part-
nering with our community. Our
mandate is to do so with integrity,
honor, respect and compassion;
while at all times conducting our-
selves with the highest ethical stan-
dards to forever maintain our com-
munity's trust and confidence.”
Dickerson, who created the
award as one of his goals of build-
ing professionalism in the police
department, said he “couldn't be
more proud” of the first officer of
the year award. Reese's badge is
part of theunique plaque.
Reese said he was surprised
and honored to receive the award.
He said he always gives 100 per-
cent on a jobhe loves.
“I don't go to work every day and
say I want to win an award,” he
said. “I go to work every day - and
do whatever I do - and give 100 per-
cent. If you're not going to put 100
percent into something, you might
as well not do it. When the chief
called me and said I was getting an
award, I was surprised. It was the
last thing I expected.”
A native of Dearborn, Reese
said his parents, Tim and Roberta
Reese, instilled a sense of pride in
him and his brothers Jason and
Ryan. He has made sure to give his
all whether he was playing base-
ball as a youngster or at Edsel Ford
High School (where he won the
Norm Schultz Award as the senior
most dedicated to the team) or
while drag racing at Milan
Dragway or in the National
MustangRacingAssociation.
“When I put my mind toward
something, I do everything I can to
make sure I'mdoing it right,”Reese
said. “A lot of things I've done inmy
life have been because of my par-
ents' influence - and to make them
proud.”
At 31, Reese became a police
officer at an older age than most
new officers. He said his favorite
part about his job is helping peo-
ple.
“I'm 100-percent focused on my
career and dedicated to the depart-
ment and the people of Romulus,”
he said. “I thought it was going to
be a great careermove and it's even
more satisfying than I thought it
would be. After three years, I'm as
excited to go to work every day as I
was onday one.”
Reese said he appreciates the
moves instilled into the depart-
ment by Dickerson, who was hired
in September 2011. The officer
cited the recent Random Acts of
Kindness Day, in which Romulus
police officers rewarded good driv-
ers with Subway gift cards, as a
positive move to make residents
feel better about the police, and he
supports the new professionalism
standards being implementedwith-
in the department.
Reese said the new mission
statement is a reflection of the way
he was trained by fellow Romulus
officers and the way he has worked
on the job sincehewas sworn in.
Mayor Alan Lambert said he has
been impressed with the police
department and praisedReese and
others whose goals are to make a
difference in the community every
day and provide the best police
services possible to the residents of
Romulus.
Reese said he appreciated his
parents, siblings, other family
members, girlfriend Sabrina Hool
and good friend Brian Branum
being onhandMonday night for the
presentation.
He also said the presence of fel-
low officers who attended the
award presentation at the council
meetingmeant a lot to him. He said
the department is like family.
“A police department is a family
- a huge family,” Reese said.
“People say they knowwhat they're
getting when they start a new
career, but until you feel the emo-
tion of brotherhood or cama-
raderie, you really don't know. It's
pretty strong here. This is a great
place to work and a great commu-
nity to serve.”
A free class on the fundamentals of square
foot gardening will take place at 6:30 p.m.
Monday, March 19, at the Romulus Public
Library 11121WayneRoad.
The event, sponsored by the Friends of the
Romulus Public Library, will feature a presen-
tation by James Lee for beginning, the “tried
but failed” and the “afraid-to-start” gardeners.
Square foot gardening is described as a
uniquely simplified system of gardening that
eliminates 80 percent of the space, work,
weeds, watering and waste of traditional row
gardening. Square foot gardening also provides
100 percent of the harvest and joy of gardening.
The fundamentals of square foot gardening
include building, planting and maintaining
new raised garden beds. The class also will
introduce participants to a natural and organic
method that “won't break your back - or the
bank.”
