Dentist continues charity work
in remote villages of Guatemala
For more than three decades, Dr. James
McHenry has treated those in need of dental
work and orthodontic work at his Plymouth
office.
What many don't know about him is the
amount of this work he's performed as a
charity service inGuatemala.
McHenry is currently preparing for his
next 10-day trip to the mountain villages of
Pina Lito and Mata Sano and the jungle vil-
lage of El Castro in eastern Guatemala. This
will be his 12th year of missionworkwith the
nonprofit organization, Faith in Action.
Faith in Action supports the people of
Guatemala with education, medical and
dental assistance, infrastructure, agricultur-
al development and church planning. The
people live in stick huts without electricity
or running water, McHenry said. His latest
tripwill begin tomorrow, March 2.
While in the villages, McHenry will spend
hours cleaning teeth and completing dental
work on patients who have no access to den-
tal care. He has helped thousands of people
throughout the years -most of themchildren.
"Seeing the bright smiles on the people
after their decayed teeth have been
restored, or extracted after months of pain is
awonderful reward forme," saidMcHenry.
McHenry has also been instrumental in
building and equipping a dental/medical
facility in the mountainous area. His trips
are all self funded.

Action

Volunteers are need for the second sea-
son of baseball at the Miracle League of
Plymouth, BilkieFamilyField.
This year, the league will use the on-line
volunteer website volunteerspot.com so that
helpers can easily sigh up for the days, times
and activities forwhich they are available.
Buddies for players, coaches, concession
standworkers andumpires are all needed.
The site will begin accepting volunteers
beginning inApril.
Those interested in coaching a team
should contact Shari Bilkie at info@miracle-
leagueplymouth.org as soon as possible.
Approximately 16 coaches are needed this
season.
Those who volunteered last year will
need to re-register this year.
shock? Her overt sexuality? Her public indis-
cretions? Remember the shock of Papa Don't
Preach, lyrics about anunwedpregnancy?
Yeah, thosewere the days, all right.
Some very nasty pundits implied that the
tall boots were to hide varicose veins and the
less than vigorous dancing and obvious lip
syncing were due to the age of the super-
super-super star.
I don't think so. I thinkMadonna has come
full circle. I don't think she is any less talent-
ed, any less intelligent or less sharp than she
was at the onset of her career. I think she has,
like so many others, grown up, not grown old.
Or maybe she has so much money now, she
doesn't need to be outrageous to sell records
of fill concert seats.
Of course her latest song contains bubble-
gum lyrics better suited to a pre-teen but her
Madgesty is probably smiling regally all the
way to the bank. She is still filling arenas and
concert venues across the country to capacity
withher tours.
Maybe she now takes an adult, responsi-
ble view of her influence on young people,
especially young girls, and perhaps has rede-
fined herself during her transition from the
outrageous to the wise. Maybe she's actually,
gasp, growing up.
Or maybe she's just tired. Being outra-
geous takes a lot of energy, or so I'mtold.
Whatever the reason, watching the
Material Girl grow up isn't easy on a lot of 40-
year-old women who thought they could
wear those crinolines, combat boots and cru-
cifixes forever.

Reporter missed opportunity
To the editor:
Here's a direct quote from Richard
Reaume, Plymouth Township supervisor
fromthePlymouthObserver, Feb. 19 edition:
Plymouth Township Supervisor Richard
Reaume declined to comment on Cox's call
for Ficano's resignation. He said county
employees have always been attuned to the
needs of PlymouthTownship residents.
"Plymouth Township works cooperatively
with the Wayne County administration,
including the executive's office and individ-
ual Wayne County departments," Reaume
said.
If I were the Plymouth Observer reporter
in this interview, I would have asked
Richard Reaume about the level of Wayne
County "cooperation" at the time the board of
trustees acquired the vacant 323 acre former
Detroit House of Corrections property on
Five Mile Road for $606,000.00 after it was
posted for $287,679.85, and if he would have
passed on this "opportunity" could the funds
have saved the imperiled township fire
department.
