Heat wave
Food drive aims to warm hearts
Senator opposes tax sale plan
State of City address set
They are hoping for a Heat Wave in
Belleville.
Heat Wave is the name given to the 2nd
Annual Community Food Drive in the com-
munity planned for today through March
15.
According to Bev Conry of Open Arms
Lutheran Church and Childcare, “Supplies
that people generously donated especially
during Thanksgiving and Christmas have
beendepleted.”
She stressed that all food and personal
care items donated stay in the communities
of Belleville, VanBuren andSumpter. “This
is a way for our hearts to warm up to the
idea of helping those who are less fortu-
nate,” she said. “Giving the gift of a person-
al care item, a food item or a monetary gift
to one of our local food banks warms the
heart of thosewe help.”
Conry said food can be dropped of at any
Van Buren Public School building, at the
Open Arms Lutheran Church and
Childcare, First United Methodist Church,
Bethany Daycare, September Days Senior
Center, Belleville Church of God and
Loranger Chiropractic.
“Many needy people have Bridge Cards
that help them with food but not personal
care items. Always in demand are toilet
paper, paper towels, tissues, bathing soap,
dishwashing soap, laundry soap and fabric
softener, diapers, deodorant, shampoo and
conditioner, toothpaste and shaving sup-
plies,” she said.
Conry said more information is avail-
able at (734) 699-5000 and that those willing
to help sort food beginning at 9 a.m. March
17 should contact her at that number. She
said volunteers are needed for the sorting
which will take place at First United
Methodist Church.
The Salvation Army is also helping to
coordinate the fooddrive, Conry said.
Senate Democratic Floor Leader Tupac A.
Hunter, who represents Inkster, commented
recently on the plan of the Wayne County
Treasurer's Office to go door-to-door selling
thousands of tax foreclosed properties to any
occupant-homeowners, renters or squatters-
for as lowas $500.
“I have taken issue with Wayne County's
tax foreclosure auction process before, and
this latest gimmick is just further proof that
the auctions are a failure and in dire need of
reform. I understand the reasoning behind
wanting to keep homes occupied rather than
abandoned, but this is just a temporary, ill-
conceived attempt to fix a long-termproblem.
He added that there are several problems
with the Wayne County Treasurer's policy. He
said there are no safeguards in place to
ensure these homes are safe and inhabitable
for the current occupants and there are no
precautions to prevent delinquent taxpayers
fromnot paying their debt to the county while
keeping their homes.
“While the county continues to struggle
with how to handle these properties, I will
keep pushing for the passage of legislation
that would make it easier for land banks to
take ownership of and improve these proper-
ties and prevent property owners fromretain-
ing or renewing their ownership while avoid-
ing paying their back taxes,” the legislator
concluded.
Mayor Hilliard Hampton will present the
State of the City Address beginning at 6:30
p.m. March 8 at the Booker T. Dozier
RecreationComplex.
In addition to the mayor's address, busi-
ness awards will be presented to those in the
community and there will be an opportunity
for socializing and networking, according to a
spokesperson.
Light refreshments will also be served and
the public is invited and encouraged to attend
the event, which is sponsored by the Inkster
Chamber of Commerce and the City of
Inkster.
The event is expected to continue for
about twohours, ending at 8:30 p.m.
The Booker T. Dozier Recreation Complex
is located at 2025Middlebelt Road in Inkster.

ber office at (734) 552-1391.
Fire chief resigns abruptly

His letter of “involuntary resignation” was
submitted by his attorney, Scott E. Combs.
The chief's son, Fire Department Lt. Ken
Grant also resigned.
Interim Fire Chief Brian Loranger, a 23-
year veteran of the department, will manage
the department until a permanent replace-
ment forGrant is named.
The letter from Combs stated,” It has
unfortunately become clear to us that Mr.
Grant cannot acquiesce in the improprieties
and inappropriate actions taking place in the
city.
“Therefore, Mr. Grant thanks the City of
time spent, but is forced to resign and pursue
other interests immediately.”
Grant reportedly gave his fire chief's bade
to Belleville Police chief Gene Taylor at
about 4 p.m. that same day. A source close to
the situation said that the locks were
changed at the fire hall that night.
Combs had no comment on the resigna-
tion.
Kollmeyer said that she had no idea or
clue about any improprieties or inappropri-
ate actions referenced in the attorney's letter.
The position is part time and pays $8,000
