Michael Van Tassel has been
replaced as superintendent of
theVanBurenPublic Schools.
Members of the board of
education approved the termi-
nation of his contract at a meet-
ing Monday, following months
of complaints and controversy
regarding Van Tassel's manage-
ment of the district. Parents
had been crowding school
board meetings for months,
demanding answers and criti-
cizing Van Tassel, and at
times,the board members for
their actions.
Parents were highly critical
of VanTassel's physical removal
of five teachers from Savage
Elementary School last month
when officials from the
Michigan Department of
Education alleged that cheating
took place on required state
tests and disallowed the results
fromthe school.
At Van Tassel's urging, an
outside firm also interviewed
students at the school to deter-
mine if there were impropri-
eties in the way the tests were
administered or if teachers
offered extra help or even
answers to students.
Parents protested the inter-
viewing of the children months
after the tests were taken and
reported that the students were
upset by the manner in which
some of the interviews were
handled.
In December, when a fresh-
man student was found with a
gun at Belleville High School,
along with ammunition in a
backpack, Van Tassel and the
school principal failed to alert
parents who did not find out
about the incident for more
than a week, also prompting
concern and criticism frompar-
ents.
In the most recent incident,
Van Tassel filed an assault
charge Jan. 28 against board
member Sherry Frazier follow-
ing a loud argument in his
office. While Frazier main-
tained that she did no more
than touch Van Tassel's sleeve
in an attempt to get his atten-
tion, he claimed that she
grabbed his arm and “poked”
him.
Van Tassel dropped his
claims of assault with the police
department Feb. 4.
During the crowded meeting
this week, several teachers crit-
icized Van Tassel's leadership
style as controlling and intimi-
dating.
Frazier, an outspoken critic
of Van Tassel, said, “The super-
intendent was exclusive. He
was not inclusive. He did not
encourage staff members' par-
ticipation in decision-making
or the board's input. “She also
said that he was “a victim of
making poor decisions.”
Board vice president Martha
Toth expressed regret at having
to terminate Van Tassel, noting
that his performance evalua-
tions have found him to be
“highly effective.” She added
that the continued criticism
from teachers and parents pre-
vented him frombeing an effec-
tive leader in the district.
“There is no chance he can
continue to be our leader when
he is under siege like this,” she
said.
Board members named cur-
rent Human Resources
Director Shonta Langford
Green as interim superinten-
dent.
