truck. One officer removed the plastic from
the license plate to obtain the number for
identification of the owner.
The officers then used a new thermal
imaging device and located what Werth
described as a “hot spot” near 8660 Napier
Road, the formerly targeted residence. As
officers approached the home, they
observed a car on fire in the driveway. They
immediately contacted the emergency dis-
patch and the Northville Township Fire
Department responded to the scene.
While returning to the location of the
vehicle that had attracted their attention,
the officers saw the truck traveling west-
bound on SixMileRoad fromNapierRoad.
Using their lights and flashers, they con-
ducted a traffic stop of the vehicle which
was occupied only by the driver.
Officers instructed Stevenson to place
both arms outside the driver's window. He
initially complied and then pulled both
arms back inside the truck and stuck out
only his left hand. He then turned and fired
at the officers, striking one of the patrol
vehicles. Officers returned fire as the driver
fled westbound on SixMile Road. While in
pursuit of the suspect, the Northville offi-
cers were joined by Michigan State Police
troopers in the chase. While being pursued,
the truck slid on a patch of ice and crashed
into a residence in the area of Six Mile
Road and Dixboro Road in Salem
Township, police reports said.
The man jumped out of the truck and
attempted to enter the residence by climb-
ing onto his vehicle and trying to break a
window in the home, disregarding multiple
verbal instructions to surrender. When he
couldn't get into the home, Stevenson began
to approach the officers with a knife in his
hand, making a verbal announcement that
he had a weapon, according to police
reports. The Northville officers fired four
less lethal rounds at the suspect, striking
him with rubber bullets which did not stop
his advance.
As Stevenson lunged toward the officers,
he was fatally shot by a state trooper at the
scene.
A subsequent search warrant was exe-
cuted at Stevenson's Ypsilanti apartment
by Northville Township detectives,
Michigan State Police officers and the
Western Wayne Community Response
Team.
They found 22 caliber ammunition, a
quantity of marijuana, items associated
with the distribution of marijuana and drug
paraphernalia.
Werth praised the officers involved and
noted that they had followed police proce-
dure. “They responded very well to the sit-
uation under difficult circumstances,”
Werth said.
The investigation by the Michigan State
Police in continuing and will include an
autopsy of Stevenson,Werth said.

CITY OF WAYNE
NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
The Zoning Board of Appeals of the City of Wayne, Michigan, will hold a Public Hearing
on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at 7:30 p.m., in the Council Chambers of Wayne City Hall,
3355 South Wayne Road, to consider the following request:
1.
American Jetway, has applied as the property owners at 3737 Venoy Road, for per
mission to place 20 semi-trailers on a temporary basis on the property. The property
is located in an Ind-2, Heavy Industrial District Zone. Section 1266.02 of the
Planning and Zoning Code does not permit temporary storage trailers.
The plans submitted to the Building Department show 20 trailers.
2.
Global Signs, on behalf of Seven Star Liquor, has applied for the property owner at
4422 S. Wayne Road, to request a variance for an additional wall sign and size
variance for the pole sign. Section 1280.08 (b)(2)(B) of the Planning and Zoning

alleyway. Also, Section 1280.08 (b)(1)(B) allows pole signs with a maximum of
100 sq. ft. of area for signs with two or more faces.
The plans submitted to the Building Department shows a second wall sign on the
north facade and a 144 sq. ft. pole sign thereby requiring a variance for 44 square
feet.
The text and any maps may be examined or written comments may be submitted at the
City Clerk's Office during business hours (10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday - Thursday).
Members of the public may appear at the public hearing in person or by counsel. At the

ing penalties of up to life in prison if he is
convicted of charges of armed robbery,

Mays was arrested and accused of
attempting to steal a 42-inch television from
a WalMart store in Canton Township in

The incident, according to police
reports, took place at about noon, Nov. 9.
TheNovi officer, in the store investigating a
case of credit card fraud, intervened and
apprehended Mays in the act of the theft,
according to police reports. During that
arrest, Mays was taken into an office in the
storewhere a scuffle ensued and the officer
was cut on the hand. The officer was not
seriously injured, police said.
Police said Mays then fled the store but
was discovered by Canton Township Police

He was arrested and taken into custody by
the Canton officers who found the knife
used in the assault under the front seat of
the car, according to police reports.

A raging house fire claimed the life of a
96-year-old woman Monday morning in
Northville.
The fire occurred in the Kings Mill 455-
unit co-operative community off Haggerty
Road inNorthvilleTownship.
According to Northville Township Public
Safety Director John Werth the first 911 call
came in at 10:11 a.m. and the first fire unit
was on the scene at 10:15 a.m.
“Upon arrival we were informed one
occupant was in the residence, and our
crews observed heavy flames in the front of
the building.”Werth said
Fire crews assisted in evacuating neigh-
boring residents in the eight unit co-opera-
tive building.
Under the terms of the mutual aid pact
Livonia and Plymouth Township Community
Fire departmentswere called for backup.
The fire started in a unit in the center of
the building and only the two outward units
were badly damaged. Werth said with “coop-
eration and good work” they were able to
save five of the eight units.
Marge Poupard, a 9-year resident said she
would help the elderly victimwith her trash,
but didn't knowher name. “She didn't get out
much in recent years,” Poupard said.
Janice Lee who's lived at Kings Mill for 8
years said she saw the flames “shooting out
of the front windows.”
The victim's son, interviewed at the scene
of the fire, said his mother was a smoker, but
would only smoke in the kitchen in the lower
level. Werth said when the firefighters were
able to enter the residence they found the
victiminher bed on the second floor.
Investigatorswere still on the scene trying
to determine the cause of the fire late
Monday afternoon and expected to be there
for severalmorehours.
Werth noted that this was only the second
death by fire in Northville Township since
1978.
