Pursuant to Michigan Public Act 12 of 2008 (amended Public Act 110 of 2006, The City and Village Zoning
Act), notice is
hereby given that the City of Romulus will hold a public hearing at
7:00 p.m. on Wednesday,
February 6, 2013 for the purpose of considering variance requests. The public hearing will be held at the
Romulus City Hall Council Chambers, 11111 Wayne Road, Romulus MI 48174-1485.
The Board of Zoning Appeals has set the public hearing to consider variances from the City of Romulus Zoning
Ordinance as follows:
1. Variances to Section 8.04(b)(3) and (5), 11.12(c)(4), and 13.02(c) to allow semi-trailer storage in the front yard
setback and greenbelt. A setback and greenbelt of 75 feet is required while a setback and greenbelt of 25 feet is
proposed.
The subject property is located on 36300 Eureka Road. DP#82-80-116-99-0001-700. Copies of the application
are available for review at City Hall during regular business hours.
All interested parties are encouraged to attend and will be given an opportunity to comment on said request.

to host open house

Schools search for new

Martin Luther King march set
St Mary Catholic School in Wayne will be
among the parochial schools across the
country “raising the standard” in education
duringCatholic SchoolsWeek
The national designation will take place
from Jan. 27 through Feb. 2 celebrating the
theme “Catholic Schools Raise the
Standards.” At St. Mary, the week will be
marked with an open house from 11 a.m.
until 2 p.m. onSunday, Jan. 27.
The event is open to all those interested
in classes for preschoolers through the 8th
grade. Teachers and administrators will be
on hand to meet with the public and the
classrooms and work done by students will
be ondisplay, according to a spokesperson.
Students from the middle school will be
demonstrating a dissection in the science
laboratory, too, during the open house.
Tuition amounts for the 2013-2014 school
year will be available, as well as possible
grant information; and registrations will be
taken., she said.
“Please join us and see what Catholic
Schools have to offer you and your family. If
you are looking to “raise the standards” in
the area of education, then this just may be
the place for you,” she added.
Those who call and pre-register at (734)
721-1240 will be entered into a drawing for
one free tuition fee for the 2013-2014 school
year for new families.

Three officers have been promoted in the
Romulus PoliceDepartment.
Chief of Police Robert Dickerson
announced the recent promotions of Lt.
Damien Hull, Sgt. Derek Turner and Sgt.
Roger Salwa.
Hull was hired in 1997. From 2000 to 2002,
he was assigned to crime prevention in the
Community Policing Unit (COPS). From 2005
to 2010, he was assigned to the CHIEF Task
Force Narcotic Unit with the Federal
Bureau of Investigation. He has served as an
evidence technician since 1999 and is a
supervisor with the police Honor Guard. He
also is a recipient of the MADD (Mothers
Against Drunk Drivers) Lifesaver Award.
Hull was promoted to sergeant in December
2010 and to lieutenant inNovember 2012.
Turner joined the Police Department in
1997. He was assigned to the patrol division
through 2000, when he was assigned to the
COPS unit, where he was assigned to men-
toring at-risk young people. In 2001, he was
assigned as the juvenile officer at Romulus
Middle School. From 2004 to 2007, he was
assigned to the patrol division. In 2007, he
was assigned to the traffic unit. Turner was
promoted to sergeant in October 2012 and is
currently assigned to themidnight shift.
Salwa has been amember of theRomulus
police roadpatrol since hewas hired in 2001.
He has been a departmental field training
officer since 2006. Since 2011, he has served
as a firearms instructor and a defense tactics
instructor.
Salwa was promoted to corporal in July
2010 and was promoted to sergeant in
December 2012.
Judge Vera Massey Jones found Richard
Douglass guilty of seconddegreemurder in a
death that occurred more than three years
ago during a bench trial in Wayne County
Circuit Court last week.
A cold case investigation by detectives
from the Wayne Police Department uncov-
ered evidence pointing to Douglass as the
perpetrator of the homicide and he was for-
mally charged on June 21, 2012, nearly three
years after the lifeless body of Joey
Kasprowiczwas discovered inWayne.
Douglass, 57, was accused of killing
Kasprowicz, 25, whose body was discovered
in a field behind the Wayne Bowl bowling
alley onMichiganAvenue onSept. 21, 2009.
Evidence introduced at the trial showed
that the defendant used blunt force trauma
to kill Kasprowicz. Massey issued her verdict
at the end of testimony from witnesses and
arguments by assistant Wayne County
Prosecutor Steve Kaplan and defense attor-
neyWilliamWinters.
In a bench trial there is no jury and the
decision regarding guilt or innocence is
made by the sitting judge.
Douglass' sentencing date is set for Jan.
24.
The search has begun to replace the
Romulus Community Schools superintendent
following the retirement of Carl Weiss whose
last daywith the district wasDec. 31.
Members of the board of education have
chosen the Michigan Association of School
Boards to conduct the search for the new dis-
trict leader and as part of that process, Marie
Miller fromthe organizationwill conduct com-
munity meetings to allow the public the
opportunity to comment.
Future meetings are currently planned for
2 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Romulus Board of
Education board room and again the same
day at 6 p.m. in the Romulus High School
auditorium.
Miller will provide an overview of the
search process and ask for input fromcommu-
nitymembers regarding the criteria to be used
in evaluating candidates.
Letters or cards listing ideas and view-
points about characteristics and competencies
of a superintendent are being accepted at
Superintendent Search Services, Michigan
Association of School Boards, 1001 Centennial
Way, Suite 400, Lansing, MI 48917 until Jan. 31.
The Romulus Community Celebration of
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day will see a slight
change of venue this year.
Due to the change at Cory Elementary
School-it is now a day care facility-the annu-
al march will begin at Romulus Middle
School, said City Clerk Ellen Craig-Bragg.
From there, participants will travel down
Wick Road to Wayne Road, and up Wayne to
Romulus High School. The roads will be
closed at the time. A shuttle service will be
available from the high school back to the
middle school.
The theme of the event this year is
'Moving Forward: Making Humanity a
Career.' Anyone interested in taking part in
the march should meet at the middle school
beginning at 7:30 a.m. Jan. 21. A continental
breakfast will be served. The march begins
at 8 a.m.
There will also be a traditional celebra-
tion of Dr. King at the high school auditorium
that begins at 9:30 a.m.
Pastor Nelson Anthony Henry is the
keynote speaker.
“He's a life coach and a motivational
speaker,” saidCraig-Bragg.
The event is sponsored by the City of
Romulus and the Romulus Ministerial
Alliance. Anyone iswelcome to attend.
