Romulus joins effort to locate
photos of missing veterans
Belleville joins Van Buren dispatch
The City of Romulus has partnered with a
statewide effort to locate photographs and
information about residents killed during
theVietnamWar.
The National Call for Photos is a cam-
paign to collect a photograph for each of the
more than 58,000 men and women whose
names are inscribed on the Vietnam
Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, DC.
The photos will be used in the Education
Center at The Wall and can be found on The
VirtualWall at www.VVMF.org.
Lisa A. Lark, Michigan Call for Photos
coordinator for the Vietnam Veterans
Memorial Fund, said the effort also seeks
brief biographical information about each of
thewar heroes.
Lark said the group is seeking photo-
graphs of four Romulus servicemen killed
during theVietnamWar:
•Army Sgt. KennethPaul Ehnis
•MarinePfc. MarionFranklinFerguson
•MarineLCpl. LawrencePoet
•ArmyPfc. ElmerWayneScarborough
A photograph and biographical informa-
tion has been located for a fifth Romulus
serviceman, Marine Pfc. Eugenio Erasmo
Fernandez Jr. Lark said Fernandez was born
on June 13, 1946. A married man, his tour of
duty in Vietnam began in January 1968. He
died of hostile small arms fire in the Quang
Tri province.
Lark, who lives in Westland and teaches
at Edsel Ford High School in Dearborn, said
organizers have located photos of about half
of Michigan's 2,663 men and women whose
names appear onTheWall.
“Half, however, is not enough,” Lark told
members of the Conference of Western
Wayne (CWW). “Every single name on The
Wall deserves to be honored. Every single
service member who gave their life deserves
to be seen and to have future generations see
themasmore than just a name onTheWall.”
Romulus Mayor Alan Lambert and
Economic Development Director Timothy
Keyes, who is one of the city's representa-
tives on the CWW, called the effort significant
and committed the city's assistance in
spreading the word about the photo collec-
tion.
“The City of Romulus applauds the efforts
of Lisa and her organization,” Lambert said.
“We will do whatever we can to help track
down photos of military heroes from our
community. Putting a face with a name will
help give them the recognition they
deserve.”
“We encourage Romulus residents, past
and present, to think about what these men
did for our country and provide any photo-
graphs or information they have so the ser-
vicemenwill be remembered for generations
to come,”Keyes said.
Photographs and information about the
Romulus servicemen - and others on the
Michigan list - can be forwarded to Lark by
email at LisaLark@VVMF.org or by phone at
(313) 410-8477. Lark said every piece of infor-
mation couldbe helpful.
Emergency dispatch services for the City
of Belleville will now be handled by Van
BurenTownship.
City council members agreed to the one-
year interlocal agreement at the Dec. 19
meeting by a 4 to 1 vote with Councilman
Brian Blackburn dissenting. Blackburn
expressed his concern about a portion of the
agreement which allows the Van Buren
Township Supervisor the final decision in
any dispute between the parties.
The township will receive $145,000 for
providing dispatch and lockup services for
Belleville. The agreement automatically
renews at the end of one year and requires a
one year notice from either party wishing to
cancel the agreement.
Blackburn was also critical of the lack of
notice required by the city prior to the town-
ship purchasing equipment that might not
be compatiblewith that usedby the city.
A provision was added to the agreement
to require negotiation of the required notifi-
cation time for equipment upgrades.
Best friends
Man's best friend wasn't forgotten by
Romulus Community Schools Local
64/AFSCME Council 25 this year
when members collected various
items for the Romulus Animal Shelter.
President Kim Wells, left, Secretary
Dawn Bonam and Vice President of
Wick Elementary Student Council,
Madison Bonam presented the donat-
ed items to the shelter. City
Councilman William Wadsworth, right,
thanked the group for the donations
and the shelter director took the
group on a tour of the facility which is
always in need of animal toys, food,
bedding, litter and volunteers' time.
Wells quoted Anatole France and
said, "Local 64 is dedicated to helping
out where ever we are need in our
community. Until one has loved an
animal, a part of one's soul remains
unawakened."
