Karen Fuchs did some very quick
Christmas shopping this year.
Fuchs, of Westland, was the lucky win-
ner of the Shop and Dine Shopping Spree
this year and got to spend $1,000 in 1,000
seconds at JCPenneyDec. 16.
This was the eighth year for the shop-
ping spree, part of the six-week long Shop
and Dine holiday campaign of the city
which included radio and TV ads, bill-
boards and lots of publicity for the city.
Three finalists for the shopping spree
were chosen from those who entered the
contest and a fourth from the audience
present at themall for the awarding of the
prize. Each was presented with a gift box,
but only Fuchs' box contained themessage
that shehadwon the shopping spree.
The runners-up, Emily Kliemann of
Wayne, Etta Maewright of Westland and
Alex Tomlinson of Garden City each won
$100 gift cards. Other prizes and gift cards
were raffled off during the presentation at
WestlandShoppingCenter.
“We are proud of Westland Shopping
Center and the entire Shop and Dine
District,” said Westland Mayor William
Wild. “Our city has so much to offer. We
have an emerging food scene with restau-
rant and cafes featuring foods from
around the world. The stores inside this
mall have something for everybody, from
our anchor stores to our smaller bou-
tiques. Our Shop and Dine district defi-
nitely has everything you want and every-
thing youneed.”

Champions program
names new director
Anthony Kennedy, a graphic design
student at William D. Ford Career-
Technical Center, won the Vice
Chairman's Award in the North
American International Auto Show
(NAIAS) poster contest.
While the auto show officials chose
only 16 posters to be honored from the
825 entries of high school students
across the state, students at the
William D. Ford Career Technical
Center were awarded four of the pres-
tigious honors.
Kennedy earned a $1,000 prize and
his poster will be featured in the offi-
cial NAIAS program, posted on the
website and displayed during the Auto
Show fromJan. 20-28.
Among the four local award win-
ners were Nathan Adermatt who won
the award for best use of color. Andrew
Sosa won second place in the poster
contest and Alan Knapp's work was
awarded third place honors. All of the
posters will be on display at the Auto
Show.
“The creativity exhibited by all of
the students is inspiring and gives us a
glimpse of the next-generation's talents
that await our industry,” said Ryan
LaFontaine, 2018NAIAS chairman.
“When you look at these young peo-
ple's work, you can see endless sparks
of imagination that may someday find
their way into the automotive design
community,” he added.
Deborah Vigliarolo has been named as
the new director of business, communica-
tion and philanthropy at the Champions of
Wayne program.
Champions of Wayne is a program
which offers Wayne Memorial High
School students the opportunity to earn
$200 for a specific improvement in their
Grade Point Average with the help and
encouragement of an adult mentor with
whom they are matched. Students achiev-
ing their goals attend an awards banquet
where their check is presents. More than
66 percent of the students participating in
the Champions program have improved
their grades, according to a prepared
release.
The program is funded by donations
andno public funding is used.
Vigliarolo has an extensive background
in community involvement and school dis-
trict programs, a Champions spokesman
said.
“I'mhappy to be back at my almamater
and elated about the opportunity to work
with such a successful program that is
focused on student success,” said
Vigliarolo, a graduate of Wayne Memorial
High School. Her experience includes
growing andmarketing programs at sever-
al credit unions including the offering
financial literacy to six school districts
and instrumental in developing Student
Credit Union program which grew to 17
branches in various elementary and mid-
dle schools.
“We're thrilled to have Deborah on
board, and we look forward to her contri-
butions to Champions of Wayne” said
Sean Galvin who oversees the program at
thehigh school.
