LYMOUTH
Members of the Northville
Township Board of Trustees unani-
mously approved an 8-year tax
abatement on both business and
personal property for Aisin, an auto-
motive parts manufacturer. The
abatement was approved at a recent
meeting of the township board. The
abatement, along with the creation
of a 17.59 area industrial develop-
ment district on Centennial Drive,
was part of an agreement to move
the corporate headquarters and 245
employees from Plymouth
Township into the Northville site.
Aisin officials said the 90,000 square
foot facility at Beck Road and M-14
in Plymouth Township was no
longer adequate for the needs of the
business. Aisin purchased a 172,000
square foot industrial facility at
15300 Centennial Drive, near Five
Mile in Northville Township to
accommodate the relocation of the
business, which supplies automo-
tive parts to international clients.
Aisin said more than $8 million
would be invested in the new build-
ing, including both improvements to
the building and the addition of
high-tech equipment used for
researchanddevelopment.
Aisin Vice-president of Human
Resources-Sales Division and
Corporate
Communications
Michael Lapinski told board mem-
bers that the companywill create an
addition 51 jobs with the move to
the Northville site. In addition to
offices, the new facility will store
products and perform product test-
ing anddevelopment.
The agreement for the tax abate-
ment is predicated on the financial
investments Aisin has promised in
both staffing and capital improve-
ments.
New contract agreements with
the City of Northville police unions
were approved recently by mem-
bers of theCity Council.
The new 3-year union pacts pro-
vide for a wage increase of 2 per-
cent the first year, and 1-percent for
the second and third years of the
contract. City officials said the
agreements include many of the
provisions in the AFSCME con-
tracts and the clerical contracts
which were ratified by the council
last spring. Officials said that mem-
bers of the four unions in the city
had contracts set to expire in 2011,
but that members agreed to forego
a wage increase due on July 1 of
2010 and extend the contracts until
June of this year. The city employ-
ees accepted a wage freeze for
more than three years in recogni-
tion of the challenging city financial
position, according to Northville
CityManager Pat Sullivan.
The new contracts will include
higher employee contributions for
health care, which will increase to
20 percent for the Blue Care
Network Plan by 2016 and employ-
ees will share the cost of both pre-
miums and Health Savings Account
contributions. The new contract
also allows the city to change carri-
ers if the same coverage can be
found keeping the same benefits
and services for employees. In 2016,
the contract can be reopened and
retiree contributions toward health
care negotiated.
