          Carleton Farms/Republic Services sponsor festival fireworks
        
        
          The Carleton Farms Landfill in Sumpter Township,
        
        
          owned and operated byRepublicWaste Services once again
        
        
          has sponsored the fireworks display at the Sumpter Country
        
        
          Fest.
        
        
          CarletonFarms, which beganwith a 4.0megawatt landfill
        
        
          gas-to-energy plant in in July of 1998 now produces 6.4
        
        
          megawatts of electrical power at the farm. The electrical
        
        
          power generated at the plant is transported 1.5 miles and
        
        
          tied into theDetroit Edison distribution grid. It provides suf-
        
        
          ficient electricity to power more than 7,000 homes and busi-
        
        
          nesses in the greater Detroit Metropolitan area. The facility
        
        
          will eventually expand to produce 12 megawatts of power
        
        
          and will become the largest internal combustion landfill gas
        
        
          plant inMichigan.
        
        
          The 640-acre landfill first opened in Sumpter Township
        
        
          in 1993. The landfill includes more than 90 collection wells
        
        
          in place delivering more than 3.4 cubic feet of landfill gas
        
        
          eachday.
        
        
          Carleton Farms is located at 28800 Clark Road in New
