Army veteran will lead group of local ‘heroes’
As has become a tradition, downtown Northville will
come alive in red, white and blue July 4 with marching
bands, patriotic floats, military honor guards, fire engine
sirens, bike parades, classic cars, dressed-up pets and veter-
ans groups as the annual Independence Day Parade takes
to the streets.
The theme of the parade this year, organized by the
Northville Community Foundation, is Celebrating America's
Heroes.
Northville will honor the VFW, AMVETS, Vietnam Vets,
American Legion and other veterans groups, recognizing
the contributions to our freedom these heroes made and
their selflesswork tohelp the community.
Army veteran Mike Holbert who heads up the AMVETS
(American Veterans) Post 171 in Northville will be part of
the celebration when he leads the military color guard that
has performed in Northville for more than 20 years. The
Northville AMVETS members meet monthly and help area
veteranswith volunteerwork anddonations.
Holbert said the group is proud to have been a part of the
Northville Independence Day Parade for more than two
decades. This year the AMVETS national chapter was rep-
resented at the annual Memorial Day ceremony at the
Vietnam Wall, laying a wreath to pay tribute to members of
America's armed forces who have made the ultimate sacri-
fice inVietnamand in other conflicts.
