One of the most popular spots dur-
ing the IceFestival this year will most
certainly be the corner of Kellogg
Park just across Main Street from the
Sun andSnowshop.
That's where the free cross coun-
try skiing lessons will be taking place
all weekend during the hours the fes-
tival is open and according to store
manager Mike Higgs, they are gear-
ing up for a crowd.
“It was so popular last year, we
had a constant flow of people,” he
said. That really isn't surprising as
the store will install a mini cross
country trail in the park, including
some small hills so fledgling skiers of
all ages can sample the sport.
“There is no age limit, adults can
do it, too,”Higgs said.
“We're all about getting people into
outdoor sports and showing people
that winter is fun. We want them to
get out and take advantage of the
weather.”
There will be free cross country
ski lessons from people knowledge-
able in the sport and all the neces-
sary equipment, including helmets
for youngsters, will be professionally
sized and fitted, including profession-
al boot fitters to ensure that the
demonstration and lesson is comfort-
able.
“We want this to be a safe as possi-
ble,” Higgs said. “There is no age
limit for this sport. Anybody can
enjoy cross country skiing. It isn't a
new sport, but it is something for
everybody.”
Higgs said that last year children
as young as 2 were on the skis and
enjoying the trail.
“As long as they can stand and
walk, they can do this. We have lots of
staff out there to help and they walk
along with them and hold onto them.
It really is a good time.”
Higgs said the weather might be a
factor if the temperature gets to 60
degrees, but otherwise, the store is
bringing in professional-grade snow
machines that will actually make
snow to fills the trail in Kellogg Park
and ensure a real feel for the sport.
After completing the lesson, par-
ticipants will receive a card for a dis-
count at Sun and Snow, Higgs said,
and last year the shop served hot
chocolate towarmup customers, too.
“We just want to get everybody out
there, outdoors, having a good time,”
he said.
