ORTHVILLE
The Canton Police Department
is looking for businesses or organ-
izations interested in hosting a
session of its new Coffee with a
Copprogramin 2014.
Following positive feedback
from the trial sessions this year,
the department has opted to
expand the program to one loca-
tion amonth in 2014.
Coffee with a Cop provides a
unique opportunity for communi-
ty members to ask questions and
learn more about the depart-
ment's work in Canton neighbor-
hoods and business districts,
notedDeputy Chief of Police Scott
Hilden. The majority of contacts
law enforcement has with the
public happen during emergen-
cies or stressful situations. Those
situations are not always the most
effective times for relationship
building. Coffee with a Cop
breaks down barriers and allows
for relaxed one-on-one interac-
tion, he said.
“We hope that community
members will feel comfortable to
ask questions, bring concerns, or
simply get to know our officers,”
said Hilden. “These interactions
are the foundation of community
partnerships.”
Requirements to host a 2-hour
session of Coffee with a Cop
include having a Canton location
open to the public and being able
to provide coffee for those who
attend.
Businesses or organizations
interested in hosting a two-hour
session, should contact the
department at (734) 394-5401.
Coffee with a Cop is a national
initiative supported by the United
States Department of Justice.
Similar events take place across
the country. This program aims to
advocate the practice of commu-
nity policing through improving
relationships between police offi-
cers and community members
one cup of coffee at a time.
David Babich, a teacher at
Amerman Elementary School in
Northville, has received a $990
grant to incorporate geocaching
into the school curriculum to
enhance national geography stan-
dardswith theuse of GPSdevices.
The grant was awarded by the
Meemic Foundation, a non-profit
organization created by Meemic
Insurance Co. The company has
been offering financial assistance
in the formof grants to schools and
educators since 1992. During that
time, the foundation has touched
more than 1.5 million students
through financial support of edu-
cation initiatives.
“The goal of Meemic
Foundation grants is to provide
the resources necessary for teach-
ers to create a dynamic learning
environment for students,” said
Pamela Harlin, director of The
Meemic
Foundation.
“Exceptional educators are always
looking for new and creative ways
to inspire their students. We want
to make sure that financial con-
cerns don't stand in the way of
those ideas.”
Grant applications are evaluat-
ed based on a variety of criteria
that are provided on The Meemic
Foundation website. The founda-
tion looks to fund innovative pro-
grams, events or projects that will
significantly enhance students'
classroomexperiences.
According to a recent study con-
ducted by Perry Research
Professionals for the National
School Supply and Equipment
Association (NSSEA), public
school teachers in the United
States spend more than $1.33 bil-
lion out-of-pocket on school sup-
plies and instructional materials.
Individual teachers spend an aver-
age of $356 of their own money on
supplies and resources, including
an average of $170 on supplies and
$186 on instructionalmaterials.
Amerman Elementary is one of
14 Michigan schools to receive a
grant fromMeemic and is eager to
put the funds to good use and to
get started on enhancing the edu-
cation experience for their stu-
dents, a spokesperson said.
Ebenezer, a play by Michigan
playwright Joseph Zettelmaier,
comes to Tipping Point just in time
for theholiday season.
In this Christmas carol,
Zettelmaier fast-forwards 15 years
after the immortal night featured in
Dickens' story. Ebenezer unveils
what happened after the Ghosts of
Christmas Past, Present, andFuture
intervened in Ebenezer Scrooge's
life. Now a great humanitarian,
Scrooge has changed the atmos-
phere of London by keeping many
charities afloat with his generosity.
But this Christmas Eve, Scrooge
hears his unearthly visitors beckon-
ing him, once again, and believes
his time on earth is nearing an end.
As the hour slowly approaches
midnight, Ebenezer sets in motion
his final charitable deed as his
nurse, Miss Poole, and his nephew,
Tim Cratchet, come together to
reminisce about the past.
"Audiences will come in very
familiar with the classic, A
Christmas Carol. This play will take
them on a new journey, with the
playwright's re-imagining of what
becomes of old Ebenezer Scrooge
15 years after the original story,"
said director Julia Glander. "People
should come to see this holiday pro-
duction because it's a new take and
a new story based on the old classic.
Most of all, it's the Christmas sea-
son, and this production will
remind us of the true reason for giv-
ing".
Ebenezer will continue through
Dec. 31. The curtain rises at 8 p.m.
Thursdays through Saturdays, with
matinees at 3 p.m. Saturday and 2
p.m. Sunday.
There is a special New Year's
Eve event Dec. 31. The show begins
at 8 p.m., and concludes with appe-
tizers catered by Rocky's of
Northville, beer, wine, and a toast
close to midnight. Tickets for the
New Year's Eve performance are
$75 each, $50 of which is tax-
deductible.
The theatre is located at 361 E.
Cady St. in Northville. Tickets are
$29 to $32 for adults and $27 to $30
for students and senior citizens, and
are available now by calling the box
office at (248) 347-0003.
These interactions are
the foundation of
community partnerships.
