Vageehe Steele is a woman who won't be
forgotten.
The well-known author and Northville
resident who died last May will long be
remembered through her books, biographic
and fiction publications like Iran: Parade of
Veils published in 2004 and Tehran and
Yonder, published in 2006. She will also be
memorialized with a room at the Northville
Senior Center where her endowment of
$100,000 will help fund programming for sen-
iors at the facility.
During an official ceremony at the center
last month, Northville Township Senior
Advisory Commissioner Symantha Heath
accepted the endowment on behalf of the
township.
Steele, a familiar face at programs at the
senior center for many years, bequeathed
the endowment through a living trust. Her
gift was an effort to restore some of the
much-needed funds of the senior center that
were lost due to state revenue sharing reduc-
tions and difficult budgetary decisions that
have plagued all local government units
recently, notedher nephew, Robert Cassar.
“My aunt's generous donation is a reflec-
tion of her gratitude to commissionmembers
like Heath and Center Director (Suzie)
Johnson for making her feel so welcome
when she moved to the township,” Cassar
said.
Steele, who was born in Iran, lived in
Rochester Hills for a time and started to visit
the center when she first moved to
Northville. In addition to her career as an
author, she was a nurse anesthetist, accord-
ing toher family.
The main banquet room at the center will
be named for Steele.
Cassar and his wife, Hedye, of Northville
Township, areSteele's surviving relatives.
She also bequeathed funds to the Arthritis
Foundation and other charities.
A committee will evaluate and determine
how to best use the funds, “ Hopefully, in a
way to bring seniors together,” Hedye Cassar
said.

Northville Township Police Officers
arrested two men last week suspected in
break-ins at threeNorthvillehomes.
All three home intrusions took place at
houses located in the Seven Mile and
Haggerty area, according to police reports.
Police were alerted by a homeowner who
witnessed two suspicious men first walking
around a neighbor's home and then entering
the house. Uniform and plainclothes offi-
cers responded to the area and observed the
two male suspects inside the home, police
said.
Police apprehended one of the men as
the pair fled from the home. The other man
was apprehended and arrested a short time
later byNorthvilleTownship officers.
Cordel Patrick-William Jackson, 18, of
Farmington Hills was arraigned in the 35th
District Court in Plymouth, on three counts
of Home Invasion, each a 15-year felony, and
three counts of Larceny in a Building, each a
4-year felony.
Bond was set by the court at $50,000 or 10
percent. Jackson remains in the Wayne
County Jail. A preliminary court examina-
tion on the charges is set for tomorrow at the
35thDistrict Court.
The other suspect is a 16-year-old juvenile
from Southfield. He is being charged with
three counts of Felony Home Invasion and
has been placed in the Wayne County
Juvenile Detention Facility pending his next
court date, according to police reports.
It may soon be easier for visitors to find
theirway arounddowntownBelleville.
The Downtown Development Authority
will spend $9,500 for the design of new signs
for the area. The project will then go out for
bid for the installation of themarkers.
The DDA members voted unanimously at
theOct. 17meeting to approve the cost for the
design of the signs quotedby SpicerGroup.
Members noted that there is some confu-
sion regarding the downtown area and
Belleville City Manager Diane Kollmeyer
agreed that city hall regularly provides direc-
tions to visitors who are lost in the downtown
area.
Members discussed the apparent confu-
sion when Belleville Road becomes Main
Street, then becomes Five Points, is then
called South Street and is then called
SumpterRoad, heading south.
DDA Administrative Coordinator Carol
Thompson said that she receives calls as peo-
ple search for directions to the high school,
the middle school, Horizon Park and Victory
Station.
The lack of a street sign for High Street at
Main Street was also discussed, including the
difficulty of providing directions that include
turning at High Street when there is no way
for motorists unfamiliar with the area to find
it.
Construction costs for the signage are esti-
mated at an additional $15,000. No time line
for the signswas announced.
