City seeks volunteers
for Veterans’ parade
This year, the City of Romulus will
sponsor a Veterans' Day Parade beginning
at 9 a.m. Nov. 11.
City officials are looking for individu-
als, particularly veterans, and organiza-
tions to participate or march in the inau-
gural event. The city will provide floats
and trailers for veterans and families to
ride on if they prefer.
The parade is open to any motorized
patriotic-themed display, officials said. All
veterans and parade entries will meet at
the Romulus Progressive Hall, 11580 Ozga
Road at 8 a.m. onVeterans' Day.
The parade route will travel from the
Progressive Hall, across Ozga and through
theRomulusWesleyan Church parking lot
onto Goddard Road and go north, turning
right on Bibbins and traveling east to
Hunt Street where the parade will turn
left, ending at Romulus Historical Park,
11147Hunt Street.
There, a Veterans Day Ceremony will
take place with involvement from local
VFW Post 9568 and other community
members. The start of this ceremony will
be a ribbon cutting for the new Veterans
Plaza and rededication of the WorldWar I
Memorial.
“Spectators are needed along the
parade route and at the Veterans Plaza
Ceremony to give the veterans the appre-
ciation and honor they deserve,” said
Maria Lambert, director of the Downtown
Development Authority which funded the
Veterans PlazaProject.
In June, Mayor LeRoy Burcroff formed
a new committee to facilitate veterans
programs and outreach in the city. “The
freedoms we share and live today are a
result of our heroic veterans and for this
we should continue to support them
wheneverwe can,”Burcroff said.
Romulus Public Services Director
Robert McCraight, who is the chairman of
the committee said, “The city of Romulus
is home to over 1,700 veterans and our
mission is to honor and assist themwhen-
everwe can.”
For more information on the Veterans
Day event, to register for the parade or to
offer other suggestions on how to help
local veterans, call Jill Martin at (734) 955-
8960.
The newest old park in the City of
Romulus is opening to the public on
Saturday.
The city will host a ribbon cutting and
grand opening at Oakbrook Neighborhood
Park-formallyMerrimanPark-fromnoon to
1 p.m.
“We've worked very hard at it,” said
Romulus Mayor Leroy Burcroff. “It's going
to be a great little neighborhood park
where people can come out and exercise
their pets.”
The park was redeveloped over the past
five weeks into a combination people park
and dog park under a plan that Bob
Dickerson, Burcroff's chief of staff, brought
to the council at the end of August. The
southern half of the park, where an old
baseball field was located, was fenced in
and converted into a dog park with an area
for large and small dogs, complete with
hoops, ramps and tunnels for the dogs to
jump through or climb. In the northern
portion, the playscapes and swing sets
were cleaned up, repainted and a pavilion
was added. The park, like others in the city,
had been closed for years due to budget
cuts. It is now the only dog park in the area.
“It looks good,” said Dickerson. “They
did a good jobwith it.”
The city did not have to use additional
tax revenue to fund the plan but utilized
savings from a tax settlement with Wayne
County, along with a grant through the
Wayne County Parks and Recreation mill-
age.
The city has been working diligently to
re-open parks throughout the year, with
Elmer Johnson and Eugenio Fernandez
Park brought back earlier this summer.
The city also entered into an agreement
with the Romulus school district to lease
Mt. Pleasant Park, which is attached to Mt.
Pleasant Elementary School, for $1.
“The city needs to do more of this kind
of thing,” said Dickerson. “We have to find
creative ways of doing things because the
budget is still tight.”
Because it is funded through Wayne
County grants, the dog park is open to any-
one, not just Romulus residents.
The grand opening ceremony will fea-
ture face painting, games for children, free
hot dogs, dog competitions and pictures
with theRomulus police andK-9 officers.
“It'll be a fun event,” said Burcroff. “We
hope the community comes out.”
We have to find
creative ways
of doing things
because the budget
is still tight.

Romulus park this Saturday
