Adult tutors needed
The Romulus Public Library is starting
an Adult Literacy Program and needs vol-
unteer tutors.
Forty twomillion adults cannot apply for
jobs, read to their children, get a driver's
license, or read a prescription because they
read below a 6th grade level, library
sources said. Anyone interested in becom-
ing a volunteer tutor, teaching basic reading
skills, can call or email Danielle Hansard,
adult services librarian at (734) 955-4518 or
dhansard@tln.lib.mi.us. Tutor training will
begin this month so volunteers are urged to
contactHansard as soon as possible.
Those who may need help in learning to
read can also contact Hansard for details
about the program.
LadiesNight Out tonight
It's that time again. Downtown
Plymouth's Annual Ladies Night Out will
take place from 5-9 tonight, Sept. 25. The
event is designed for ladies to enjoy an
evening on the townwith friends.
Participating stores will have special
sales, gifts, samples, prizes and refresh-
ments. Several restaurants will also have
special drinks, appetizers and more.

Grief Support seminar set
GriefShare, a nondenominational pro-
gram that features 13 individual lessons
that focus on grief topics associated with
the death of a loved one will be offered at
6:30 p.m. on Thursdays beginning tonight at
Romulus Wesleyan Church, 37300 Goddard
at Huron River Dr. in Romulus. For infor-

The internationally-recognized seminar
features DVDs of nationally respected grief
experts and real-life stories of people who
have learned fromtheir journey of grief, fol-
lowedby small-groupdiscussion.
Students will learn how to recognize the
symptoms of being stuck in grief, facing the
"new normal" in life, renewing hope for the
future, and more. Grief-related handouts
will be available each week. Registration
fee is $15, which will include a
workbook/journal that is used in conjunc-
tionwith theweeklyDVDs.

Artist event planned
DrawnToTheNight will take place from
7-9 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Plymouth
Community Arts Council, 774 N. Sheldon
Road inPlymouth.
The evening will include open life draw-
ing with a costumed model. Participants
should bring their own art supplies. The
evening will feature host and illustrator
Kirbi Fagan.
The fee is $10 at the door and comple-
mentary refreshments will be served.
There will also be a cash bar for those 21
and older.

Chamber hosts trade show
The Belleville Area Chamber of
Commerce will host the annual trade show
from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. this Saturday, Sept.
27 at Wayne County Community College,
Western Campus, located at 9555 Haggerty
Road inBelleville.
Admission is free and there is no cost or
obligation to be part of the drawings for
prizes including an IPad 2.
Children can enjoy movies and free pop-
cornwhile parents visit vendor stations.
Library offers computer classes
The Romulus Library will offer a com-
puter class, Typing and Mousing Around
the Internet from9-11 a.m. Sept. 27.
This class is designed for individuals
who have never used a computer before.
Learn basic mouse skills and/or practice
typing using online self-paced tutorials. No
prior computer experience required.

OpenHouse is planned
In recognition of National Disability
Employment Awareness Month, Services to
Enhance Potential (STEP) will host at Open
House from9 a.m. until noonOct. 1.
The celebration will take place at 35000
Van Born Road in Wayne and will include
tours of the facility to demonstrate how
individuals of all abilities are impacting
their communities in many positive ways,
refreshments and information.

Library sets Story Times
The Romulus Library will offer
Preschool Story Time for children 31/2 to 5
at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays.
Visitors will read stories, sing songs and
do crafts onSept. 30 andOct. 7.
Toddler Story Time for children 2-31/2 is
planned for 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays at the
library. Children can read stories, sing
songs, play anddo crafts.

Oct. 1 andOct. 8.
Sign up is not required, but strongly pre-
ferred. Weekly reminder calls are available
by signing up at the front desk. Supplies are
limited, so drop-ins are welcome, on a first-
come, first-serve basis.

Candidates Forumplanned
The Belleville Area Women's Club will
host a Meet the Candidates session at 6:30
p.m., Thursday, Oct. 2, at the Belleville
Moose Lodge, at the corner of Sumpter and
Harris roads.
The candidates invited, who will all be
on the November ballot, include those run-
ning for the Belleville Area District Library
Board and the Van Buren Public Schools
Board of Education.
Light refreshmentswill be available.
Library sets used book sale
Friends of the Wayne Public Library are
organizing a used book sale planned for
noon until 8 p.m. Oct. 1 and from noon until
5 p.m. Oct. 2,3 and 4.
The sale will take place in the communi-
tymeeting room.

Candidates to speak
The League of Women Voters will
host candidate forums in the area to
help educate and inform voters about
candidates' positions on issues.
The league does not endorse in the
races but sponsors and organizes the
forums as an informational service.
Candidates for the State House 20th
and 21st District will meet from 7-8:30
p.m. Sept. 29 at Canton Township Hall,
1150 S. Canton Center Road in Canton.
Candidates for the 20th District, which
serves Plymouth, Plymouth Township,
Wayne, Northville Township and part of
Canton include Republican incumbent
Kurt Heise of Plymouth Township and
DemocratNateSmith-Tyge of Plymouth.
Candidates for the 21st District,
which serves Canton, Belleville and Van
Buren Township include Democrat
Kristy Pagan and Republican Carol Ann
Fausone, bothCanton residents.
Candidates from the new 7th District
of the Michigan Senate will meet at 7-
8:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Livonia Civic
Center Library auditorium, 32777 Five
Mile Road in Livonia. The redrawn dis-
trict serves Canton Township, Plymouth,
Livonia and Wayne. Candidates include
incumbent Republican Patrick Colbeck
and Democrat challenger Dian Slavens,
both residents of Canton.
