The largest family celebration in the city,
the Pumpkin Festival, is set for Sept. 20-22 in
downtownRomulus.
The 16th annual festival features some-
thing for everyone and is expected to draw
thousands of participants from Romulus and
SoutheastMichigan, organizers said.
City staff and dozens of volunteers are
making final preparations for the festival.
Some of the highlights include the Parade of
Lights on Friday night, a car show on
Saturday, a tractor and lawn tractor show on
Sunday, food, children's games, a carnival and
a host of contests. There will be pumpkin-
themed events and a great lineup of live
musical entertainment all weekend long.
Many of the activities are provided at no cost.
The festival places emphasis on the city's
history. Many of the events will take place in
and around Romulus Historical Park and the
Downtown Pavilion on Hunt Street. There
will be a number of old-fashioned events for
family and the citymuseumand other histori-
cal structureswill be open for tours.
The Downtown Development Authority
began funding and organizing the festival two
years ago, when it returned to its glory days.
DDA Director Maria Lambert said that since
the festival has something for everyone, it will
bring the community together in celebration.
Several Pumpkin Festival-related events
are held off-site, including a white elephant
garage sale set for 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 21
and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 22 at St. Aloysius

Romulus welcomes Lee Steel to business community
Police continue to investigate motorcycle, truck collision
Romulus Pumpkin Festival will begin next weekend
Lee Steel, one of the most highly antici-
pated new firms in Romulus, is open for
business.
The third-generation distributor of flat-
rolled carbon steel products known for
industry-leading technology has opened a
200,000-square-foot steel-service center at
36320EurekaRoadnext to the I-275 freeway.
Ground breaking for the new facility took
place about a year ago and the plant opened
officially earlier this year.
The center will be fully functional in the
fourth quarter of 2013, President Zachary
Taylor said. Two 72-inch slitting lines have
been installed while work continues on a
new acid-less, environmentally-friendly pick-
ling line inside the facility.
Taylor said his Novi-based firm had out-
grown its Detroit location as demand for its
product continued to grow. The search for a
new facility using new technology discovered
the right site in Romulus with rail on one
side, freeway access on the other and Detroit
Wayne County Metropolitan Airport around
the corner, Taylor said.
“It's great to be in Romulus,” he added.
“We've already got two or three new cus-
tomers just because they saw our frontage
after landing at the airport.”
Mayor Alan R. Lambert, who met with
Taylor early in his location search process,
welcomed Taylor, his sons Thomas and Scott,
and company staff to the city during a tour of
the cavernous facility lastmonth.
“We have been so excited since Zack
Taylor announced they were looking in
Romulus,” Lambert said. “They are adding
to our tax base, providing jobs and becoming
wonderful corporate citizens of our city.”
Lambert touted the project in his 2013
State of the City address. The mayor praised
the Taylor family and said Lee Steel helped
resurrect the city fireworks display by pro-
viding necessary funding.
Taylor said his father founded a small
business in Dearborn in 1947 that grew and
moved to Detroit in the early 1970s. Taylor
joined the staff in 1974. Nowhis sons are vice
presidents in the business.
Taylor said the firm outgrew the Detroit
site “almost immediately, but we found out
how to make it work. We bought new equip-
ment, production doubled and the plant
became too small.”
Headquarters were opened in Novi and
the company expanded to Grand Rapids and
now Romulus. Today, Lee Steel serves cus-
tomers throughout North and South
America, providing a full range of flat rolled
steel. Products include hot rolled steel, cold
rolled steel and exposed coated products.
The firm supplies slit coils and precision
blanks, all processed in-house utilizing the
most state-of-the-art equipment available.
City Planner Carol Maise said the
Romulus facility will include an extended
rail line, tree and wetland preservation and
extensive landscaping. The Romulus proper-
ty will include a DTE Substation with an 80-
foot-highwireless communication tower.
The pickling line, purchased from Red
Bud Industries Inc., will feature Eco-Pickled
Surface (EPS) technology, a patented alterna-
tive process to traditional acid pickling. The
process removes mill scale from hot rolled
black strip steel just as effectively as acid
pickling, but uses water and steel grit instead
of chemicals. Taylor said the only byproducts
are steamand spent grit, which gets recycled.
“It's a beautiful product,” Taylor said. “We
will be one of the first to have EPS in our
area. It's the future.”
The cause of a motorcycle-
vehicle accident last week in Van
Buren Township remains under
investigation.
According to police reports,
Van Buren Public Safety officers
and Huron Valley Ambulance
were dispatched to the intersec-
tion of Bemis Road and Elwell
Road at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday,
Sept. 1 in response to a motorcy-
cle accident.
A preliminary investigation by
responding officers indicated that
Tennessee resident James
Bullock, who was driving a
Chevrolet Impala eastbound on
Bemis Road collided with a
motorcycle traveling westbound.
Officers said that Bullock was
attempting to northbound onto
Elwell when the vehicles collided.
The motorcycle rider, Sheryl
Karain of Sumpter Township, was
treated at the scene by Huron
Valley Ambulance medics and
Van Buren Township firefighters.
She was subsequently transferred
to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital
where she was listed in serious
condition, according to police
reports.
The Van Buren Township
Accident Investigation Team was
called to the scene to conduct the
investigation and collect evi-
dence. Alcohol does not appear
to be a factor and the incident
remains under investigation,
police said. Anyone having infor-
mation about this incident is
asked to contact Detective
Kenneth Toney at the Van Buren
Township Police Department at
(734) 699-8937.
Anyone requesting additional
information about the incident
can contact Lt. Ken Floro at the
Van Buren Township Police
Department (734) 699-8915.
Romulus Mayor Alan R. Lambert, left, joined Tom Taylor, vice president of sales Zack Taylor,
president and Scott Taylor, supply quality manager on a recent tour of the new Lee Steel
plant in the city..
There are always surprises, he said.
Parade watchers line the street to enjoy the
show. To help keep the parade route safe,
Oakley cautioned that parade entries are not
allowed to throw anything to the crowd - “no
candy, no trinkets, no coupons.”
