What would you do with an
extra $279,000?
That's what the Canton Public
Library will decide after finaliz-
ing paperwork to complete the
early payoff of its building con-
structionbond.
Originally payable through
2020, the early payoff results in a
savings of $279,200 in interest.
The final payment on the bond
was made in September, 2015 and
the deed transfer from the
Canton Township to the library
was completed lastmonth.
The early payoff reflects com-
mitment of the library to financial
stewardship and responsible
budgeting of taxpayer money,
noted Michelle Fare, Canton
Public Library trustee and secre-
tary/treasurer.
“The board is focused on pro-
viding the most library benefits to
our community at the greatest
value. Paying off the building
bond five years early saved
Canton taxpayers $279,200 in
interest, and will allow us to redi-
rect those funds to library collec-
tions, programs, services, and
facilities for our patrons,” Fare
said in a prepared statement.
The bond was originally
authorized in 1988 for $6 million
for the construction of the library
building and was refinanced for a
building expansion in 1999. Since
its establishment in 1980, the
library has grown from a small
space on the third floor of the
Canton Township Administration
Building with 20,000 books to a
53,000 square foot facility with
more than 350,000 items in the
collection. In 2013, the library
received the inaugural Library
Aware Community Award, a
national honor from Library
Journal recognizing the library
engagement with the community,
and in 2014, a survey of Canton
Township residents identified the
library as the most popular desti-
nation inCanton, Fare added.
“The library has always
enjoyed a close partnership with
Canton Township, from specific
departments, such Leisure
Services and Public Safety, all the
way up to the township board,”
remarked library board chair-
person Nancy Eggenberger. “We
are grateful to the township for
their leadership in establishing
an independent public library
more than 35 years ago, and look
forward to seeing our positive
relationship continue.”
