The Wayne-Westland Parks and
Recreation is now offering
SilverSneakers at the Wayne
Community Center. This program is
covered by many health plans for
individuals 65 years and over.
A SilverSneaker membership
allows usage of the Aquatic Area,
Indoor Track, Wellness/Fitness Area,
Cardio-Theater Area and Dry/Wet
Saunas at theCommunityCenter.

Raffle tickets aid shelter
Jake's Auto and Truck Repair has
donated a 2013 Del Ray scooter
which is being raffled off to help
fund theRomulus Animal Shelter.
Tickets are $5 each or three for
$10 and are available at both Jake's

12003 S. Huron River Dr, at the
Romulus Animal Shelter and from

Softball leagues now forming
The Wayne Westland parks and
Recreation Department is now
accepting registrations for the Fall
Softball Leagues
Games will take place weekdays
at Anderson Park and Wayne and
Jaycee Park in Westland. There will
be a managers meeting at 7 .m. Sept.
4 at the Wayne Community Center.
Games will begin the week of Sept.
10. Registration fee is $250 per team
and must be paid in full at the time
of registration. An additional $13 per
team must be paid to the umpire at
the beginning of each game.

Free Family Fest planned
CrossPointe Community Church
will host the 8th annual Free Family
Fest and Car Show fromnoon until 5
p.m. Aug. 24.
There will be free food, rides,
games, music and a classic car show.
The first 500 cares registered will
have spots on the field. There is no
registration fee.

Mom toMomsale set
First United Methodist Church of
Wayne-Westland will host a Mom 2
Mom Sale from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Aug. 24.
Table rental is $20 per 8-foot
table. More than 30 tables will be
available. There will be a large-item
room and concessions and a bake
sale.
Admission is $1 at the door. The
church is located at 3 Towne Square

Village Faire planned
Visitors can take a step back in
time during the Village Faire at
PreservationPark inCanton.
The visit to the earliest days of
Canton Township will take place
from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Aug. 25 at the
park, located at 500 North Ridge
Road inCanton.
Several historical structures such
as the 1860s Bartlett-Travis House;
theHugh ClydeHouse, one of Wayne
Counties oldest homes; the Cady-
Boyer Barn, a pre-Civil war Barn
and a 1930s silowill be open.
Residents of all ages are welcome
at the free Village Faire organized by
Canton Leisure Services in partner-
ship with the Canton Historical
Society. No registration is required.

Canton Idol being sought
The Canton Idol singing competi-
tion for middle and high school stu-
dents will take place Aug. 27-29 at
the Village Theater, 50400 Cherry
Hill Road inCanton.
Contestants will range from sixth
grade through high school students.

threewinners in eachdivision.

The Romulus Goodfellows have
planned their general membership
meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27,
at the Romulus Community
Methodist ChurchFellowshipHall at
11160 Olive. The purpose of the
meeting is to elect board and com-
mittee members as well as discuss
dates for the 2013 "No Child Without
aChristmas" campaign.
Anyone interested in volunteer-
ing is encouraged to attend.
Cruisin' Hines gets in gear
Rev up your engines and enjoy a
taste of history from 9 a.m. until 6
p.m.on Sunday, Aug. 25, at the third
annual Wayne County Parks Cruisin'
Hines event.
"Cruisin' Hines is a fantastic event
that's different from the rest," said
Wayne County Executive Robert
Ficano. "It brings back somany great
memories. I always love to see my
personal favorite, the Ford
Mustangs," Ficano added.
Hines Drive will be closed to reg-
ular traffic from Outer Drive to Ann
Arbor Trail. Traffic will be limited to
classic cars and hot rods. The park
opens at 9 a.m. for cruisers, who
must enter Hines Drive from
Merriman Road. All spectators can
enter at Merriman Road, Telegraph
Road or the Warrendale picnic area
inDearbornHeights.
There will be event goodies and
food concessions available at the
spectator areas.

Hospital hosts healthy Taste Fest
Oakwood Healthcare is hosting a
Health Education Community Event
and Taste Fest at Oakwood
Annapolis Hospital from 4-7 p.m.
Aug. 27. The free outdoor event will
feature healthy and fun activities
suitable for the whole family and is
designed to provide the community
with information from health and
medical experts about how to main-
tain ahealthy lifestyle.
Activities will include: ask the
pharmacist, ask the Dietician, health
information on diabetes, heart dis-
ease, COPD, hypertension. There
will also be a bicycle and bike hel-
met safety activity, as well as a
chance to win a new bicycle and hel-
met. Samples of healthy snacks,
appetizers, treats and beverages will
be provided.
In case of rain, event will take
place onAug. 28.
Shopping aids charity
Plymouth Community United
Way is partnering withMacy's for the
retailer's eighth annual Shop for a
Cause charity shopping event on
Saturday, Aug. 24.
Customers can purchase $5 shop-
ping passes from the local United
Way.
Customers can use the pass in
every Macy's store for a 25 percent
discount on regular, sale and clear-
ance merchandise and, they will be
eligible to win a $500 gift card, no
purchase necessary.

Elder lawseminars set
Plymouth Community United
Way in partnership with the
Plymouth Community Council on
Aging will sponsor a free Elder Law
Series with attorney Gary S. Allen
beginning 10-11:30 a.m. Thursday,
Sept. 5, at Plymouth Township Hall,
9955 N. Haggerty. Allen, an estate
planning and elder lawattorney, con-
tinues the series Sept. 12, 19 and 26,
and Oct. 3. Advanced registration

Church hosts kick-off dinner
Our Lady of Good Counsel
Catholic Church in Plymouth will
host a free Alpha Kick-off dinner
from 5-7 p.m. Sept. 7, 1-3 p.m. Sept. 8
and from5-7 p.m. Sept. 14.
The dinner will be followed by a
presentation introducing the new
parish Alpha Course, a10-week pro-
gram aimed at answering the call to
the New Evangelization. Pastor, Fr.
John Riccardo believes that Alpha is
the way "to teach the truth of the
Gospel and to spread the GoodNews
to all people that we may share in
God's own abundant life." The din-
ners are open to Catholic and non-
Catholics who live within the parish
boundaries.
The dinners will take place at
Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic
Church, 47650 N. Territorial Road in
Plymouth. Childcare is available at

Home tour set for September
The AAUW-Northville Novi
Branch 18th Annual Home Tour,
Three Centuries of Homes, will take
place from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Saturday, Sept. 21.

Novi homes spanning three cen-
turies of construction and varying
widely in architecture and interior
design, each reflecting how families

Church seeks crafters for show
St. Theodore's Confraternity of
Christian Women is looking for
crafter for the annual church fall
craft show.
There are 70 tables available for
rent at $25 each for the show which
will take place at the church from 9
a.m. until 3 p.m. Oct. 12.
