A vehicle accident that severely injured
a 57-year old Belleville woman remains
under investigation by the Van Buren
Public SafetyDepartment.
According to police reports of the inci-
dent, police officers and Huron Valley
Ambulance were dispatched to an accident
scene at about 5:05 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug.
13. When officers arrived at the scene on
Belleville Road, just south of the Meijer
store, they found Jackie Van Steppes, 57, of
Belleville, severely injured in the Cadillac
Seville shehadbeendriving.
Van Steppes was transported by ambu-
lance to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital by
HuronValleyAmbulance.
Preliminary investigation by the Van
Buren Township Accident Investigation
Team determined that Van Steppes lost
control of theCadillac Sevillewhile turning
right onto southbound Belleville Road. Her
car crossed the center line and entered the
northbound lanes of Belleville Road, strik-
ing aDodgeDakota pickup truckhead on.
The driver of the truck, 63-year-old
Bernard Evans of Belleville, appeared
uninjured in the accident andwas released
at the scene, according to police reports.
The incident remains under investiga-
tion and police said that alcohol and exces-
sive speed may have been contributing fac-
tors in the accident.

Motion by Bennett, supported by McLaughlin to remove from the table, hold the second reading, and declare adopted an amendment to
the Township Code of Ordinances, Chapter 46, Article I, Division 3, Fireworks. Further, I move to publish the text amendment in a paper
of general circulation in the Township on August 22, 2013. Motion carried unanimously.

DIVISION 3, FIREWORKS, TO ADD TIME RESTRICTIONS FOR THE DISCHARGE OF CONSUMER FIREWORKS IN
COMPLIANCE WITH PA 65 OF 2013
THE CHARTER TOWNSHIP OF CANTON ORDAINS:
SECTION 1. AMENDMENT TO
CODE. Sec. 46-262. Exemptions.
A permit is not required under this division for the possession, ignition or discharge of novelties or
low-impact fireworks. A permit for the discharge of consumer fireworks may be required under Sec. 46-266.
Sec. 46-263. Permit or
registration required.
(a)No person shall sell consumer fireworks in the township without having obtained a consumer fireworks cer-
tificate from the department as required by, and complied with all the requirements of Act 256, as amended. The consumer fireworks
certificate shall be prominently displayed at the retail location for which the certificate was issued. (b)No person shall sell low-impact
fireworks without having registered with the low impact fireworks retail registry maintained by the department.
Sec. 46-264. Discharge
of novelties, low-impact fireworks and consumer fireworks.
(a)Except in the case of a permit issued by the township under section
46-266, consumer fireworks shall not be ignited, discharged, or used by any person at any time, except on the day preceding, the day of,
or the day after a national holiday. On these holiday dates only, the ignition, discharge or use of consumer fireworks is permitted between
the hours of 8:00 am and 12:00 am (midnight) only, except the consumer fireworks shall be permitted between the hours of 8:00 am and
1:00 am on New Year’s Eve, and always only in accordance with state and local law. (b)When permitted, consumer fireworks shall not
be ignited or discharged on public property, school property, church property, or property of another person without that organization’s
or person’s written permission to use consumer fireworks on the premises. (c)No fireworks shall be ignited or discharged within 70 feet
of any building, or on any public street. (d)Minors shall be prohibited from possessing, using, igniting or discharging consumer fire-
works. (e)No person shall use low-impact or consumer fireworks while under the influence of alcoholic liquor or a controlled substance
or both.
SECTION 2. VIOLATION AND PENALTY
Any person or entity that violates any provision of this Ordinance may, upon
conviction, be fined not more than Five Hundred ($500.00) Dollars or imprisoned not more than Ninety (90) days, or both, in the dis-
cretion of the court.
SECTION 3. SEVERABILITY
If any clause, sentence, section, paragraph or part of this Ordinance, or the appli-
cation of thereof to any person, firm, corporation, legal entity or circumstances, shall be for any reason adjudged by a court of compe-
tent jurisdiction to be unconstitutional or invalid, said judgment shall not affect, impair or invalid the remainder of this Ordinance. It is
hereby declared to the legislative intent of this body that the Ordinance is severable, and that the Ordinance would have been adopted
had such invalid or unconstitutional provisions not have been included in this ordinance.
SECTION 4. REPEAL OF CONFLICTING
ORDINANCES
All Ordinance or parts of Ordinance is conflict herewith is hereby repealed only to the extent necessary to give this
Ordinance full force and effect.
SECTION 5. SAVINGS CLAUSE
All rights and duties which have matured penalties which have been
incurred, proceedings which have begun and prosecution for violations of law occurring before the effective date of this Ordinance are
not affected or abated by this Ordinance.
SECTION 6. PUBLICATION
The Clerk for the Charter Township of Canton shall cause this
Ordinance to be published in the manner required by law.
SECTION 7. EFFECTIVE DATE
This Ordinance, as amended, shall take
full force and effect upon publication as required by law.

The Village Theater at Cherry
Hill is now accepting entries for the
21st Annual Canton Fine Arts
Exhibition, which will take place
Oct. 3 -28. Entries for the exhibition
will be accepted through Aug. 26
online at www.cantonvillagethe-
ater.org. Interested artists may also
request an entry formby calling The

All media is accepted for the
exhibition. Only digital image files
on CDs will be accepted for review.
No slides will be accepted for con-
sideration. Paintings and hangings
should not exceed 5 feet wide or 6
feet high, 40 pounds in weight and
must be properly and appropriately
framed and prepared for hanging.
Sculpture dimensions must not
exceed 5 feet by 5 feet by 6 feet and
200 pounds inweight.
Original works of art must have
been completed in the last three
years.
A non-refundable entry fee of $15
for each submitted piece is
required.
This year the competition will
award $1,950 in cash prizes includ-
ing $750 for Best of Show, $500 for
second place, $300 for third place,
two honorable mention awards of
$100 each and four merit awards of
$50 each. The deadline for entries is
Aug. 26. Juried result notification
will bemailedby Sept. 15.
This year the juror will be Gilda
Snowden, a graduate of Cass
Technical High School and Wayne
State University, where she received
a BFA, MA and MFA in painting.
Snowden is currently interim chair
and professor of the Fine Arts
Department at the College for
Creative Studies, and is also gallery
director of the Detroit Repertory
Theatre.
A reception is planned for the
selected artists at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 3,
with a special program starting at
7:30 p.m. The Village Theater has
exhibition hours throughout the
year (except for major holidays)from
10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Monday through
Friday, by appointment, and during
all public performances. The exhibi-
tion is free and open to the public.

Wanted
Canton Police investigators are seeking the identification of a
man who exposed himself to women in two separate incidents.
Witnesses reported that the man approached female pedestri-
ans and exposed his penis. Both incidents occurred in the
evening hours, the first on July 15, in the area of Cherry Hill and
Sheldon Road. The second incident occurred on July 21, in the
area of Hanford and Marshall Road, according to police reports.
The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 5-feet,
10-inches tall, about 18-25 years of age. The man was described as unshaven and hav-
ing brown hair. In both instances the suspect was wearing black shorts. Police are ask-
ing anyone who may recognize the person described to a sketch artist to contact the
Canton Police Department at (734) 394-5400. Callers may remain anonymous.
