for continuing support of art institute services for the students, residents and visitors of Wayne County. The law
allows the authority to seek authorization from the electors to levy a tax of not more than 0.2 mill (20 cents per

years 2012 through 2021? It is estimated that if approved and levied, this new millage would generate approxi-
mately $8,284,722 in 2012. YES [ ] NO [ ]
COUNTY PROPOSITION J

release, home detention and community restitution; with at least one-tenth of the millage used to acquire, build

"The U.S. and German troops
square off in battle featuring
authentic armor and re-enactors
in historically accurate dress as
the P-51 Mustangs fly overhead
and provide tactical air support
for the embattled American
ground forces."
The air show will take place
Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 4 and
5 at Willow Run Airport in
Ypsilanti and proceeds will bene-
fit the Yankee Air Museum in
Belleville.
More than 20 P-51 Mustangs
will gather for a display of speed,
power and agility, Walsh said.
"The P-51 Mustang is credited
with ending World War II and is
now known as one of the most
iconic fighters of all time."
A special attraction will be the
Sea Harrier F/A2, the only pri-
vately owned Harrier in the
world. Art Nalls, a retired and
decorated Marine Corps pilot
purchased the Sea Harrier in
2005 and spent two years restor-
ing the aircraft to flying condition.
"This will be the first time the
Sea Harrier will ever be seen in
Michigan," he said.
Smokey, the F-86 Sabre will jet

times referred to as the Sabrejet,
was a transonic jet fighter aircraft
produced by North American
Aviation. The Sabre is best known
as America's first swept wing
fighter which could counter the
similarly-winged Soviet MiG-15in
high speed dogfights over the

said.

from the 1960s, the portrait was
lent to Maybury Sanatorium in
1935. It hung there until it was
returned to themuseum in April of
1965.
Segal said she knew if the paint-
ing was returned to Washington,
D.C. it would probably go into stor-
age where it would remain, so she
set out to find a local site with cli-
mate control and the full-time
staffing the government requires
for such a loan. She found it at the
Local History Room of the
NorthvilleDistrict Library.
Ackerman agreed to conserve
the portrait and themuseumcreat-
ed a frame for the work at no cost
to the city.
Ackerman said he has been hik-
ing inMaybury StatePark for years
and thinks that a new frame made
fromwood fromone of the downed
back cherry treeswould be a fitting
tribute forMaybury’s portrait.
Ackerman, who learned his con-
servancy and restoration skills at
the University of Buffalo, said he
usually has about 10 paintings in
the lab at the museum undergoing
repair or restoration and that he
worked on the Maybury portrait
“as time permitted.”
“We have a pretty busy loan pro-
gram at the DIA, it's a world-wide
program” he said.
“But we were glad to do this as
part of the history of the area,” he
said.
The history of the tuberculosis
sanatorium which bore Maybury's
name began in 1917 when the City
of Detroit negotiated the purchase
of eight farms in Northville
Township and began development
of the 900-acre facility. Owned and
operated by the city of Detroit, it
became internationally acclaimed
and visited by dignitaries from
around theworld.
Maybury was a well-to-do bach-
elor who had retired from a suc-
cessful real-estate business at the
age of 37. He almost single handed-
ly supervised the construction of
the sanatorium. He borrowed a
team of horses from Howard
Whipple, a local farmer who
hitched the team to a plow with
Maybury leading the way on foot.
Together they wandered up and
down the land plowing a single fur-
row. That furrowmarked the roads
that were built in Maybury around
1918. The roads still exist today in
the interior of the park and are
used for the trails. Maybury was
located between Seven and Eight
Mile roads and Beck and Napier
roads.
Maybury Sanatorium opened in
1921, at that time it was called
Detroit Municipal Tuberculosis
Sanatorium. Later the name
changed to Spring Hill Sanatorium
and finally toMaybury Sanatorium
until it was closed onAug. 4, 1969.
In the fall of 1931 Maybury was
seriously ill, having been infected
with the same disease for which
the sanatorium was created. His
was a terminal case and Maybury
spent his last days on the farm he
loved. On Nov. 4, 1931, he died in
theMaybury farmhouse.
The 945-acre Maybury State
Park, the first state park in Wayne
County, openedMay 1, 1975.
