When students return to
Thornton Creek Elementary
School in Northville this fall, a
new face will greet them in the
principal's office.
Jennifer L. Bennett was
named principal at Thornton
Creek by a unanimous vote of
members of the board of educa-
tion June 23. She succeeds
Alison Epler, who requested a
return to classroom teaching
and is expected to join the
Silver Springs Elementary
School staff in the fall.
Bennett, who assumed her
new post July 1, comes to
Northville Public Schools from
Monroe Public Schools, where
she most recently served as
principal for three years and
assistant principal for two years
at Custer Elementary School. In
her 14 years with Monroe
schools, Bennett also has served
as District Social Studies
Consultant, a teacher for grades
four through six, and as a K-8
Technology Media Specialist. In
addition, Bennett has extensive
experience in professional
development at the school, dis-
trict, state and national levels. In
her roles as principal, assistant
principal, consultant and
teacher leader, she has used her
ability to act as a change agent to
positively impact student learn-
ing. Bennett also has extensive
experience in technology inte-
gration in the learning process
including working with class-
room teachers and students to
create digital portfolios.
“Jennifer Bennett is a for-
ward thinking educator with
vast experience in teaching,
facilitating professional learn-
ing communities, and actively
engaging students, staff and the
community in the school
improvement process, all with
the goal of ensuring success for
all students in the 21st century
world,” said Northville
Superintendent of Schools Mary
Kay Gallagher. “Jennifer is a
compassionate and skilled
leader who will continue to
build on the collaborative school
community and positive culture
that already exists among the
students, teachers, staff and fam-
ilies at Thornton Creek. We are
fortunate to have Jennifer join-
ing our administrative team.”
Bennett has a bachelors in
language Arts (K-8) and elemen-
tary education (K-5) and a mas-
ter of arts in education from
Siena Heights University in
Adrian. She has her State of
Michigan
K-12
School
Administrator Certification
from Eastern Michigan
University.
“At the heart of my work over
the past 14 years is my love for
watching students grow and
develop into creative and inde-
pendent thinkers,” Bennett said.
“I am eager to work in partner-
ship with the many dedicated
teacher leaders, staff, students
and families at Thornton Creek
to ensure every student has an
opportunity to succeed.”
Bennett lives in Monroe with
her husband, Steve, and their
three children.
Canton Leisure Services has
received a $2,022 donation for
Therapeutic Recreation pro-
gramming from the Canton
Newcomers & Neighbors Club
that will assist in funding Camp
A.B.L.E., a summer camp for chil-
dren aged 8-14 with a broad
range of disabilities.
“We couldn't be more excited
about and appreciative of the
Canton Newcomers & Neighbor's
generous decision to donate
these funds to Camp A.B.L.E.,”
said Jennifer Provenzano, recre-
ation coordinator. “Providing a
traditional summer camp experi-
ence with adaptions that keep
activities fun and inclusive
despite the wide range of disabil-
ities that often challenge our
campers isn't always easy, but it is
always worth it for us. The ways
that we see our participants try
new things, develop skills, and
make friendships and memories
is incredibly rewarding.”
This year the Canton
Newcomers & Neighbors select-
ed Camp A.B.L.E. to be the recip-
ient of their philanthropic efforts,
which included funds raised
from their popular Mom-2-Mom
Sale.
“Camp A.B.L.E. is a perfect
match to our organization's fund-
ing priority this year,” said Betty
Nolan, vice president and direc-
tor of community relations for the
Canton Newcomers &Neighbors.
“We have a tender heart for chil-
dren with special needs. We
want campers to be able to focus
on fun rather than disabilities.
We are very pleased to provide
funds for Camp A.B.L.E.'s wish
list of items including toys that
will help make camp days more
fun for campers and staff mem-
bers.”
