Carnival Day planned at Farmer’s Market
County requires township to assume drain costs
TheFarmersMarket inRomulus
will host Carnival Day on Aug. 3.
Vendors including those selling
homemade baked goods, fresh eggs,
and handmade crafts will be on
hand along with the usual selection
of freshhomegrownproduce.
Market days take place from 9
a.m. until 2 p.m. every Saturday and
will continue through October in
downtown Romulus at the pavilion
near the intersection of Goddard
and Hunt streets. The Romulus
Farmers Market opened its second
season June 1 and has already had
525 visitors during the month of
June.
New this season is the addition
of three market interns, Nick
Pickford, Tesa Hines and John
Poet. They are all students at
Romulus High School who are
learning about event planning, sta-
tistics, and their local neighborhood
while gaining community service
hours.
Vendor applications are still
being accepted. The market is
specifically seeking committed ven-
dors to sell produce, woodcrafts,
honey and other craft and food
items. The market only accepts
handmade and locally produced
items.
The market is also looking for
interested musicians (individual or
ensemble), artists, painters and
other entertainers to perform
throughout the season.
For more information about the
Romulus Farmers Market and its
2013 season, or to become a vendor,

book.com/RomulusFarmersMarket.
Van Buren Township officials
have one more reason to help every
business in the community stay
viable now that the municipality
must take responsibility for storm
water drainage at any closed busi-
ness.
Wayne County requested the
change in responsibility from the
township and the board of trustees
agreed that the new conditions
were being imposed on them by the
county without any real recourse or
options in thematter.
The agreement to accept the new
county conditions was accepted by a
4-2 vote, with trustees Jeff Jahr and
Regina Miller casting the no votes.
The four affirmative votes were
cast, trustees said, to facilitate the
opening of a new business which
could have been delayed had the
board rejected the Wayne County
plan.
Jahr was particularly opposed to
accepting the responsibility as, he
said, the county writes the specifica-
tions for storm water drainage sys-
tems and the county inspects them
to ensure compliance. He said the
proposal from Wayne County
offered little insight into the
requirements that could be placed
on the township and that Van Buren
was signing a blind agreement.
Planning and Economic
Development Director Arthur
Mullen agreed to speak to other
local municipalities to see if there is
any interest in a joint action to fight
this county practice which has been
imposed on communities for the
past several years.
Jahr said he was in agreement
withany effort to fight the practice.
out using any money from the city general
fund.
The Romulus Rotary Club took the lead
on presenting the fireworks, working with
the city Fireworks Committee of Mayor Alan
R. Lambert, Mayor Pro-TemLeRoy Burcroff,
Fire Chief David Allison, Building Director
Bob McCraight, Downtown Development
Authority Director Maria Lambert, Chief of
Staff Betsey Krampitz, City Clerk Ellen
Craig-Bragg, Finance Director Debbie
Hoffman, Police Commander Josh Monte,
Department of PublicWorks (DPW) Director
Tom Wilson and Purchasing Director Lynn
Conway. The committee was responsible for
securing the sponsorships.
“We thought it was very important to
bring back the fireworks,” Lambert said. “To
have a great show and not have the city pay
for it was important. I want to thank our
sponsors, all the people who contributed to
the night, theRotary and everybody that was
there. It was an excellent show. It really was
better than ever.”
Rotary Club President Gary Staffeld also
praised the overall community effort that
went into the fireworks, specifically thank-
ing the Romulus police and fire depart-
ments and the DPW for providing set-up,
public safety and safe travels. He compli-
mented the Romulus Board of Education
members for allowing the fireworks to be
presented on school grounds.
A key addition was the newly-formed all-
volunteer Romulus Police Reserves. All 12
reserve officers were on hand at some point
of the night in their first event as a unit.
Further assistancewas provided byWaste
Management and Scotty's Potties, whose
services were either donated or provided at
a reduced fee.
Speaking for the sponsors, Safiedine Oil
President Jim Safiedine called it an impor-
tant night for the community - “something
we need every once in awhile.”
Staffeld said the community is so grateful
to the sponsors that he urged those who
viewed and enjoyed the fireworks to make
contact with the sponsors and say “thank
you” by email:
•Lee Steel Corp.: info@leesteel.com
• Public Service Credit Union: communi-
ty@pscunow.com
•USPark: offsiteparking@aol.com
• SafiedineOil: jim@safiedineoil.com
“The Romulus Rotary Club wants to
thank the City of Romulus for allowing us to
be part of the 2013 fireworks celebration,”
Staffeld said. “Everyone came together for a
night of great fun and greatmemories.”
The Rotary also organizes the annual
Parade of Lights that kicks off the Romulus
Pumpkin Festival. This year's parade begins
at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, starting at City Hall
and traveling along Goddard Road through
FivePoints.
