Music in the air

More than 140 visitors toured eight home gar-dens in Wayne recently, hosted by members of the Wayne Garden Club. The group organizes the walks twice a year and this year chose a Music in the Garden theme and featured live musicians in six of the gardens on the tour. The walk focused on the northwest corner of Wayne to include homes in Glenwood Heights, Whitney-Knoll and Legacy Estates. There were koi ponds, waterfalls and fountains but the main attraction was the beautiful flowers.

Westland offers ‘Youth Works’

Church plans outdoor service

Westland teens can get help finding a summer job and learn about personal finances through a new local program. The Wild About Youth - WORKS! Program is an effort to provide summer jobs with local employers for 15 Westland residents 16-18 years old. The program is a partnership between Fifth Third Bank, the City of Westland, the Westland Chamber of Commerce, andWayne-Westland Community Schools.

“Fifth Third Bank, as a corporation, is very committed to spreading financial litera-cy in the community. We have several pro-grams in place,” said James Allen, manager of the Fifth Third Bank Financial Center on Ford Road across from Westland City Hall. “We take every opportunity to assist the com-munity in that area.” “Many of the kids never have had any training with banking and financial literacy and that is where we canhelpmake a difference,” saidAllen. As part of the program, students will be required to open a savings account and

encouraged to set and maintain personal financial goals. The students are required to attend at least one financial literacy training session presented by Fifth Third Bank. The students that save the most and meet their financial goals will be entered in a contest to win an Apple iPad courtesy of Fifth Third Bank.

“We have partnered up with the chamber of commerce to put the word out to employ-ers,” said Westland Mayor William Wild. “There is a pretty good range of jobs.” Right now, there are six businesses signed up to participate with another four being sought to provide the minimum wage jobs. The stu-dents are expected to work 16 hours per week over the summer.

Wild About Youth, founded in 2007, is a task force made up of city officials and resi-dents to provide opportunities for the youth of theCity ofWestland.
