Three members of the
Westland Police Department
were awarded honors during a
presentation recognizing their
exemplarywork recently.
Officer James Compton was
named as Officer of the Year
while Ofc. Brandon Paris and
dispatcher Dina Benyo were
each chosen for the Chief's
DistinguishedServiceAward.
Compton has been with the
Westland department for four
years, after beginning his law
enforcement career with Detroit.
He was recognized for his
involvement with the Police
Explorers, where he serves as an
advisor to youth and his work as
a field training officer, helping
recent hires in the department
learnprocedures.
Westland Police Chief Jeff
Jedrusik noted that Compton
was responsible for 15 guns
being taken off the city streets
and that he was involved in sev-
eral cased that also involved
large quantities of drugs.
Jedrusik said that Compton had
consistently been in the top 25
percent of number of arrests
made annually.
Deputy
Chief
Randy
Thivierge announced the award
to Benyo, who has been a dis-
patcher with the Westland police
for more than 23 years. She was
recognized for her efforts to help
improve dispatch operations,
officials said. Benyo also handles
many of the departmental
administrative duties as a volun-
teer, Thivierge said. He called
her a "leader among her peers"
and said that she "consistently
strives to better the police
department, exemplifies what it
is to be a great dispatcher. She's
always looking for better ways to
do the job."
Paris' work with the first

honored with a Distinguished
Service Award. The academy is a
week-long summer program for
high school students which intro-
duces them to police work. The
academy was Paris' idea, noted
