Library to host noted shipwreck expert
A 30-year desire to discover
the last-known sunken ship in
Lake Huron sent renowned ship-
wreck discoverer and Canton
Township resident David Trotter
aboard his 32-foot dive boat last
summer. Trotter knew how the
Hydrus touched the bottom of
theGreat Lake in 1913 during the
worst storm in the Great Lakes'
history and he knew of the casu-
alties and near 35-foot waves, but
he didn't know what he and his
team were in store for on that
July day.
The Hydrus was the only ship
left in the waters of Lake Huron
that hadn't yet been discovered
before Trotter and his team
made the miraculous find that
sent everyone back in time more
than 100 years.
The Canton Public Library
will host Trotter and his tales of
that July 2015 excursion and
more of his findings at
Shipwrecks of the Great Lakes
from 7-8 p.m. June 28. Trotter is
also a deep diver, author, lecturer
and photographer. His discover-
ies have been featured on both
television and in newspapers
throughout theUnited States and
Canada.
Trotter no longer dives him-
self, due to the toll it takes on the
body, and at 75 he works with a
team of divers, shipwreck
research enthusiasts andmore to
uncover some of the Great Lakes'
biggest shipwreck mysteries and
he tours to share his knowledge
with the public.
“In the late 1880s and early
1990s as many as 4-5,000 ships
plied the Great Lakes, moving
people, farm commodities, coal
and iron ore,” he said. “Ships
andpeoplehave stories to tell.”
At public talks like the upcom-
ing one at the Canton Library,
Trotter said he appreciates being
able to talk with the audience in
addition to listening to their sto-
ries about family members that
made their living on the Great
Lakes.
The Great Lakes served as a
tremendous artery of commerce
that was one of themain vehicles
for building the Midwest region
and Trotter spends time during
his talks emphasizing the impor-
tance of that part of our history.
“I have been fortunate to
become part of living history,
speaking for and about the gener-
ations of men and women that
made the economy work 'on the
water' in theGreat Lakes region,”
Trotter said.
Shipwrecks of the Great
Lakes is scheduled in the library
CommunityRoomat 1200 Canton
Center Road. This program is
part of Connect Your Summer at
the library and will be a topic
using the #cysreturnofthefun
hashtag on social media. For
more information on the Canton
Public Library, Connect Your
Summer and Trotter's visit, go to
