The 2014-15 budget adopted by members
of the Wayne Westland Community Schools
Board of Education will include a full range
of programs for students.
In addition, the district will use only about
$400,000 of fund equity to pay expenses, an
amount that has been as high as $6million in
past years.
Officials predicated the budget on antici-
pated revenue of $105 million with expendi-
tures of $105.4 million. Most of the funds,
about $82.8 million will come from state
school aid which is expected to increase to a
minimumof $7,187 per student.
The district is also anticipating $7 in state
funding to pay employee retirement costs.
With a state limit of 25 percent of payroll
allowed for retirement expenses, the state
funds will close the gap between the state
limit and the actual cost of about 33.99 per-
cent for next year.
The budget also includes a loss of 50 stu-
dents and a continuing decline in local prop-
erty tax revenue. Last year, the property tax
reduction was 8 percent, against a 3.1 per-
cent drop expected in 2014-15. The district
expects about $15.5 million in local tax rev-
enue this year.
That property value decline will increase
the district debt levy to 5.46 mills, up from
5.26mills.
Officials said that five staff positions will
be lost in 2014-15. Eighteen teachers are
retiring and many of the 11 teachers who
were sent pink slips are expected to be
recalled.
