the second Plymouth Township engine finally
arrived.
The first three-man crew from the Ann
Arbor Road fire station in Plymouth arrived
about 9 minutes after the initial call. They
were informed there were people in the house
when they arrived, but they were unable to
enter the home to attempt a rescuewithout the
back up of the Northville Township crew, as
dictated by professional safety standards and
protocol,Werth said.
“The three firefighters there couldn't do
anything,”Werth said.
Exacerbating the situation, the engine from
the Ann Arbor Road station stopped working
almost immediately after arriving at the Mills'
home. Because of the vehicle failure, and
delay of the second truck from the Beck Road
station, firefighters hooked hose lines to
hydrants, according to fire department reports
of the incident.
Mills, who recently underwent heart sur-
gery, said he thinks the fire might have started
from a small battery charger for a video cam-
erahehadplugged-in inhis basement office.
No injuries were reported in the incident
although bothPlymouthTownship fire engines
remain out of service. Fire officials said that
Northville Township and Livonia fire depart-
ments have been alerted of that situation.
Mills said he was extremely grateful to the
firefighters and felt lucky to be alive, thanks to
their efforts. The basement and first floor of
the home suffered water and smoke damage.
Mills said he was hoping to be able to live in
his family camper during the cleaning and
repair of thehome.
feels “it's our responsibility in the
work we do to educate the youth
about the importance of preserving
thehistorical past of a community.”
“We want to instill respect in
young people so they see the beau-
ty and history of a cemetery and
honor those that have passed on,”
she said.
Megan Petersen, an eighth-
grade science and math teacher at
Norup School, said the annual
headstone restoration at cemeter-
ies is among the favorite projects
onLegacyDay.
“This group of eighth-graders
loved being at the cemetery,”
Petersen said. “I think they got a lot
out of it. They gained some insight
into the wealth of information a
cemetery can be. They also gained
insight into respecting people's
past.”
City officials were grateful for
the effort and greeted volunteers
upon their arrival. City Clerk Ellen
Craig-Bragg and Treasurer Stacy
Paige donated pop and chips.
Councilwoman Linda Choate, who
is on the cemetery board, donated
bottled water and paper towels.
Vasant Chapatwala, owner of
McDonald's restaurants in
Romulus, provided lunch for all of
the volunteers.
“We cannot thank Sacred
Spaces, Andrea and Laura enough
for taking an interest in our project
and volunteering their work,”
Lemmon said.
The cleanup effort at the ceme-
tery continued last Saturday as
part of the annual Romulus city-
wide Clean Sweep Day. Volunteers
gathered at the cemetery to trim
brush, rake leaves and pick up rub-
bish.
Lemmon said one of the high-
lights of the day was volunteer
Mike Bunch's unearthing of a long-
buried grave marker of the late
Austin J. Moore, who served in the
Navy. Mr. Moore died in 1955.
Mayor Pro-tem LeRoy Burcroff
publicly thanked everyone who
participated in the Saturday Clean
Sweep, which saw volunteers plant
flowers in the downtown area and
other public places, pull weeds,
sweep alleyways, pick up trash and
perform other cleanup duties. The
Romulus Senior Center, theAnimal
Shelter and school grounds were
among the other targeted locations.
“Thank you, thank you, thank
you,” Burcroff said during the city
councilmeeting last week.
